English GM Norm candidates

Jonathan Hawkins has a good chance of a norm at the 4ncl and Yang-Fan is also in contention. Andrew Ledger has a slight chance of his third norm but would probably need to score 2.5/3.

My Limited understanding is that Adam Hunt is going for his GM title next year..........

Perhaps you could do this Tom , 11 Whites if you can find any 2350 to play for us in 4ncl who will take 11 blacks....

The ability to get norms with huge colour skews is a bit of an (unavoidable) loophole in the qualification rules IMO. In an ideal world everyone would have two FIDE ratings - one when playing white, and one when playing black.

Stumbled across another "aged and gathering dust" possible GM norm, by Angus Dunnington. He mentions it in that book of his I am still reading (yeah, I'm a slow reader and must be on commission to mention it all the time!), but have been unable to confirm it or where it was achieved. It might not even be a norm. What Dunnington says (writing in 2003) is:

"Today, on the other hand, having for one reason or another failed to achieve my initial promise in some respects (my one GM performance is a decade or so old), it is a number of years since..." (page 18 of Chess Psychology, 2003)

So that would be around 1993 or earlier. Dunnington got his IM title in 1989. I'm not sure of Dunnington is referring to a GM norm performance, or a GM-level TPR (tournament performance rating)? Can anyone shed light on this?

Maybe you should be his agent.

GM level TPR and norm are pretty much the same thing and if Angus stated that he had a GM performance in one tournament then it most likely means he got one GM norm for that. Technically anything less than the level the norm is set at is not a GM performance.

GM level TPR and norm are pretty much the same thing and if Angus stated that he had a GM performance in one tournament then it most likely means he got one GM norm for that. Technically anything less than the level the norm is set at is not a GM performance.

Assuming that he played the required amount of GMs, foreigners and other titled players etc

On the other hand, I don't remember his making a norm and the word "performance" seems needlessly ambiguous, if he is writing for a chess audience who would be expected to understand what a "norm" is. (Of course a TPR of 2600 is still something to be proud of, whether or not it makes a norm).
