Unga Talangers Tournaments

Post by LawrenceCooper » Wed Oct 28, 2026 8:27 am

Supratit Banerjee has made a positive start to the GM norm all-play-all: https://lichess.org/broadcast/unga-tala ... 1X#players

Likewise, Jan Murawski in the IM norm section: https://lichess.org/broadcast/unga-tala ... aU#players

Jan is now on 4.5/6 with a 2447 performance.

How are Jan's norm chances after the two draws that took him to 5.5/8? I presume he needs a final round win?

Supratit out of the GM norm running after three successive losses. His time will come...

I think this tournament is being played in the UK school half-term holidays. It does look like Supratit and Bodhana will both continue to be amateurs (with funding), but will this impede their progress compared to those in other countries that may push their prodigies into near-fulltime chess?

I am not condoning young players being hothoused (a reprehensible practice) and it is good that the UK's talent is developed responsibly, but does it objectively lead to different outcomes?

Am trying to remember how much chess people like McShane, Adams, Short, played as youngsters, though we do live in different times.

Non-existent because I think the required score is 7/9.

Adams went pro at 16, certainly only played the majority of this chess in weekend or school holidays before this time, as his father was a school teacher / headmaster. The two books by him and his father went through his junior years in great detail. Not sure about Short and McShane, but probably very similar. Of these three, only Short and Adams were the only two who turned into full time professionals.
