Plaques for and places named after chess players

Post by Christopher Kreuzer » Sun Oct 25, 2026 2:55 pm

Are there many plaques and monuments to chess players? I have one example (below) of a chess player being commemorated by a room named after him (though the chess element probably was not the reason, he was a very senior civil servant).

That is the Milner Barry Room at the Civil Service Club in Central London, the name being that of Stuart Milner Barry (1906-1995).

I suppose memorial tournaments for chess players are kore common. Lots of examples of those. I know there is also a Tigran Petrosian Chess House (club) in Yerevan.

Howard Staunton's former residence, 117 Lansdowne Road (Notting Hill), is a blue plaque site. The dates are incorrect, since it reads 1871-1874, whereas he actually lived there from 1872 to 1874, though I see that English Heritage has corrected its website in that respect.

The Marshall Chess Club, in New York City, is named after Frank J. Marshall.

I think we may find a lot of chess venues are named after chess players
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I did not make it clear from the thread title, but was hoping also for examples of statues of chess players. There is a carved relief of Alekhine on his grave marker:

This is the Tigran Petrosian Chess House:

I found this blog on chess statues:

https://danamackenzie.com/blog/?p=944

They only found three: Max Euwe (Amsterdam), Mikhail Tal (Riga) and Tigran Petrosian (Yerevan).

I think Paul Keres is immortalised on a stamp.

I have dragged my own thread off topic.

Back on topic, an earlier thread on blue plaques from 2020 (the thread, not the plaques):

I wonder how many chessplayers have models at Madame Tussaud's.
