It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let you know that Wallington Chess Club has
decided to close.
During our AGM, the committee expressed concerns regarding the club’s membership,
financial situation and the availability of committee members. This led us to hold an EGM
last Wednesday (23rd September) to discuss whether continuing the club was a viable
option.
Regrettably, we have decided that, due to the problems facing the club, we will be
closing from next week, which will be our final Wednesday club night.
I am very sorry that this is quite abrupt. Unfortunately, this also means that we will not
be able to participate in the Surrey League this season. I appreciate that this may cause
some disruption, particularly given that the season is already underway, and I apologise
for any inconvenience this may cause.
Thank you for all your support of Wallington Chess Club over the years. We wish you and
all the teams in the league the best of luck for the rest of the season. It is a great shame
that we have reached this point, but we feel that this is the right decision given the
circumstances.
Kind regards,
Daniel Luck

Re: Wallington Chess Club
A letter circulated within the Surrey County Chess Association (SCCA) states that Wallington Chess Club was founded in 1895, but a report in the Chess Player's Chronicle (October 31st 1883) states that they were one of the 6 clubs which founded the SCCA in 1883.

Re: Wallington Chess Club
It is very sad to see a club with such a long history folding and yet we are also seeing new clubs being created.

No, but I remember Adlestrop

"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

They obviously couldn't cope without you.....
Seriously, been there done that. Its always sad news when a long standing chess club is no more.

They may well have lost their webmaster. The person named on their website hasn't played for them since December 2023. He's been playing for Southampton University since October 2023.John Upham wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2026 2:37 pmThe out-of-date nature of

Sadly, you might well be right and no doubt the login credentials for the site will have only been known by that person.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2026 3:58 pmThey may well have lost their webmaster. A very common cause of web site loss over the years since 1993.
