Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Richard Bates >How on earth do they produce these silly and illogical rules?< (that is about the Under 21 Champion actually being 18-20. There is a similar rule for the U-16 actually being 15.)
It is because the organisers do not understand what the word Under means. I had an argument about this for Torquay last year about the U16. Of course it started out as precisely that when I was the original organiser, but after I fell ill and most players had entered, it became 15.
It is a pity because it breaks with the long-standing tradition. Both Michael Adams and David Howell won three titles at the British. By the same faulty logic, somebody U21 or a female should not be eligible for the British Championship.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
I dont see the logic being 'broken' - there are some very strong young players around at the moment who could potentially scoop all those junior prizes in one fell swoop- its not much of an incentive to anybody else in those age brackets to know that they cant win anything.
Any opinions expressed will not be held to account.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
I agree. I don't see a problem with the way the prizes are allocated to specific age groups, and there is nothing to prevent any of them winning the British Championship title. We just need to stop calling them 'Under...'Joey Stewart wrote:I dont see the logic being 'broken' - there are some very strong young players around at the moment who could potentially scoop all those junior prizes in one fell swoop- its not much of an incentive to anybody else in those age brackets to know that they cant win anything.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
On a positive note. Figures reached 771 this morning, overtaking Liverpool and Swansea. Still a little way to go to catch Torquay or Scarborogh, but 800+ looks a realistic target now. You never know, maybe the ECF could make a small profit! For those people not entered - what a shame, it going to be so, so, so, good!

Reason: To use w rather than f to signify girls in the U-16s; f means FIDE Master in lists like this.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
But the rules aren't even consistent, even if you support the idea of strict age ranges for prizes, because of the treatment of the U18 title. If you argue that nobody under 10 on 1st Jan should be eligible for the U12, nobody under 12 on 1st Jan eligible for U14, nobody under 18 on 1st Jan eligible for U21, then why is the U18 open to EVERYONE under the age of 18?Adam Raoof wrote:I agree.

If you are an average player in a strong age group then your chances of winning titles will always be limited. I don't see why the titles should be structured so that a similarly average (or weaker) player in a higher age group is continually able to win just because they are 'lucky' enough that their age group is significantly weaker.Joey Stewart wrote:I dont see the logic being 'broken' - there are some very strong young players around at the moment who could potentially scoop all those junior prizes in one fell swoop- its not much of an incentive to anybody else in those age brackets to know that they cant win anything.
Anyway i'm not generally a fan of the way that junior chess currently discourages highly talented individuals from seeking out tougher challenges than sticking to their age groups would offer.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Richard,
You don't have that quite right.
Somebody playing in the British Championship who is U18 is eligible for just one age group championship. An U10 playing in the U11 Championship is eligible for that title and also eligible for the U10 ONLY if he plays in that separate event.
I don't agree with the 18-20 and 15 Championships, for the reasons you give, but they are logical. One of the great glories of chess is that it is not age conscious. I don't know whether this is true of any other sport (possibly swimming). Felix Ynojosa is playing in the U14 rather pointlessly. If his objective is to win as many of the titles as possible, he will have to play twice in the U16 in 2011 and 2012. By then he will probably have been U18 champion more than once. This will not help him improve his chess. If he was allowed to play the top 7 U14 simultaneously, at least that would be competitive.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Well, I don't know about that. In the Southern Gigafinal of the UKCC, it was reported on this forum that he only won the U14 in that on a coin toss. The unlucky runner-up in that, Marcus Harvey, has entered the British U14 too. It'll be interesting to see if he can exact some form of revenge in the British.Stewart Reuben wrote:If he was allowed to play the top 7 U14 simultaneously, at least that would be competitive.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
My point is that it is inconsistent that Felix Ynojosa is eligible for both the U14 and U18 (but not U16!!!) titles but somebody aged 17 is not eligible for the U21 title. So the U14 is 12-13, U21 is 18-20, but U18 is 0-17. The U18 is an anomaly which is treated differently because it doesn't have its own tournament. But then the U21 doesn't have its own tournament either!Stewart Reuben wrote:Richard,

If you don't want one person running off with both cash prizes then you could specify that both can't be one by the same person, but separate the cash from the titles if someone wins both.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
I'm only speculating, but is the U14 a qualifying tournament for World Youth selection? I did wonder if this was a contributory factor towards the introduction of the age bands for the sections. There doesn't seem any other logical reason for excluding competitors in the U14 from the U16, given that the two tournaments don't overlap! Just seems to be turning away possible entry fees.Stewart Reuben wrote:Richard,

Of course it doesn't explain the U21, since we generally send the strongest player to the World Junior, regardless of age.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Other than age, there is nothing to stop someone playing in both the U14 and U16 events. Indeed one person, Chantelle Foster, has.
Where there is more than one age range in the same event then a player can only win the appropriate one. This is consistent and logical.
I understand your logic too and I could easily argue both ways on this one. There is merit in both ways of doing it. Since the request came from those involved in the junior side of the game I saw no reason to oppose it.
I just realised that this sounds like a politician's answer so I'm now going to bathe in disinfectant.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
You're right, Richard. The U14 (and indeed, all age-limited events at the British) is part of the John Robinson Grand Prix. The other events are the London Junior, and tournaments at Wolverhampton Grammar School, Yateley Manor and Swindon. The top three scores from that count. The winner of the JRGP for each age group is selected for the Europeans, I believe. However, you may get into the World Youth team via the back door. If the World Youth qualifier (who qualifies from the trial) can't go to the venue for whatever reason, then they swap the places around.Richard Bates wrote: I'm only speculating, but is the U14 a qualifying tournament for World Youth selection? So juniors will have to play these 6 events every year in order to play for England. Then there's the UKCC, which takes up another 3 weekends, and people play in because it's far more prestigious (and carries far more prize money) than any of the other events. Yet it's ignored in terms of England selection (at least, in the above process). Go figure.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Page 25 of the British Chess Championship programme is interesting. It shows the number of entries to the Championships since 1989. They seem to have remained pretty constant at about 900-1000 entries, until recently where they're perhaps 100 short of that on average. The number of juniors playing has dropped by about half in that time, though. It went from 400+ juniors in the mid-90s to less than 300 on a regular basis just 5 years later. If you take out the change from Commonwealth to British Isles, I'd say that these numbers are good. While chess may have declined in popularity over that time (particularly the juniors), the British Championship seems to be just as popular as ever.
