Nick Pert's IM and GM titles

Post by Christopher Kreuzer » Sun Aug 16, 2026 11:11 am

To clear up some confusion, having watched this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnOdaTvv6Dc&t=806s

Nick Pert got his IM title automatically (a 'direct title') by winning the U18 World Championship in 1998. He then attained three GM norms by 2001, but then a period of university study intervened and it was not until 2003 that he got his rating to the required level of 2500.

However, I am struggling to find a record of those three norms (when and where)...

The FIDE online site only goes back to 2003 (I think the 2001 date on the FIDE rating card for Nick Pert refers to rating-conditional award of the title). Can anyone help?

(1) First GM norm: 6.5/9 at the 1999/2000 Hastings Challengers.

(2) Second GM norm: [SCORE TBC] during the 1999-2000 4NCL season.

(3) Third GM norm: 7/9 at the 2000/01 Hastings Challengers.

(2) Second GM norm... ???
Oakham Masters perhaps (April 2000) winner with 6.5 from 9.

BritBase says the average rating of the event was 2406 so 7/9 would have been needed for a GM norm (unless the title regulations were different in 2000).

Confirmed by TWIC.

Trying to work out which events Nick Pert played in at that time. FIDE records cut off online just before then, and the ECF records also do not go back that far. Have tried a site-specific search of TWIC but that is not helping either. TWIC should have most major events.

Have still drawn a blank. Only candidates so far are the Smith and Williamson Young Masters 2000 or the 4NCL season that ran from 1999-2000.

At the Smith and Williamson Young Masters 2000 (in July), Nick Pert scored as follows:

R1: Win vs 2322 (Palliser, Richard)
R2: Win vs 2266 (Greet, Andrew)
R3: Draw vs 2357 (Bates, Richard)
R4: Draw vs 2417 (Webster, Andrew)
R5: Draw vs 2351 (Gladyszev, Oleg)
R6: Draw vs 2359 (Bitansky, Igor)
R7: Draw vs 2273 (Vigus, James)
R8: Loss vs 2328 (Middelburg, Tom)
R9: Loss vs 2238 (Mahesh Chandran, P.)

So not that one then...

Must be the 1999-2000 4NCL season.

I cannot find 4NCL records online prior to 2001-2:

https://www.4ncl.co.uk/pre2010/0102_index.htm

Can anyone unearth the 4NCL Division One results for 1999-2000?

The second norm was indeed from the 4NCL 1999-2000 season, as related by Jonathan Rogers on this forum back in December 2013:

[1999/2000 4NCL season] Funnily enough it was still someone else who made a GM norm for the Club that year (Nick Pert).

For the record, for that 2nd GM norm, Nick Pert scored as follows (played for Barbican 4NCL first team in 10 of the 11 rounds of the 1999-2000 4NCL, skipping round 6):

R1: Drew B vs GM Jonathan Mestel (2479) [Bd 1 vs The ADs]
R2: Drew W vs Andrew Law (2304) [Bd 3 vs Wood Green 2]
R3: Won B vs IM Jonathan Parker (2523) [Bd 1 vs Bigwood]
R4: Drew W vs GM Nigel Davies (2518) [Bd 1 vs Silvine White Rose]
R5: Won W vs John Littlewood (2313) [Bd 1 vs North West Eagles]
R7: Won B vs IM Michael Hennigan (2496) [Bd 3 vs Index-IT]
R8: Drew W vs IM Simon Ansell (2383) [Bd 1 vs Bristol]
R9: Won W vs GM Jon Levitt (2438) [Bd 5 vs Wood Green 1] (*)
R10: Drew W vs GM Tony Miles (2579) [Bd 3 vs Slough]
R11: Lost B vs IM Danny Gormally (2504) [Bd 3 vs Guildford A&DC]

(*) Barbican 4NCL won this match against Wood Green 1 by the score of 4.5-3.5. Slough won Division One that season, with Barbican coming fourth on tie-break.

Final score: 6.5/10
Average rating of opponents over 10 rounds: 2453.7
Performance rating over 10 rounds: 2573.7

Discounting round 11 loss:

Final score: 6.5/9
Average rating of opponents over 9 rounds: 2448.1
Performance rating over 9 rounds: 2625.9

Note that Jonathan Parker, though rated 2523, was still an IM at that point (GM title in 2001). Similarly for Danny Gormally (rated 2504 and an IM, became a GM in 2005). The short draw against Tony Miles in round 10 secured the GM norm.

Not sure what board Nick Pert played on in that season - it may have varied. The PGN I downloaded of the games from that season give two ratings for Nick Pert (2425 and 2396) who was an IM at the time, though Olimpbase lists him as an FM for some reason. I think the two ratings are because it was across two rating lists (but am unsure what ratings are used when calculating 4NCL norms across a season).

All ten games below (just because it is possible).
