In all play all divisions, pairings are announced at the start of the season. Even in a Swiss team event, pairings are known before the team list is submitted. I think that's the right way round as team selection or board order can be tweaked according to the opposition,Tim Spanton wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:19 amI'm not suggesting using registration lists; rather making the pairings after team lists are submitted on the day.

In all-play-all events you do not need to base round-one pairings on team strength; that's only important for swissesRoger de Coverly wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:35 amIn all play all divisions, pairings are announced at the start of the season. It is if you wish to use the current structure of one "strong" team and one "weak" per weekend. Also, the opening weekends teams can be unrepresentive of a squads strength accross the season.Tim Spanton wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:40 amIn all-play-all events you do not need to base round-one pairings on team strength; that's only important for swisses

I am still confused with all this, if it ain't broke why bother discussing all this
If you believe there is a better process than the current model then do the build work and testing then either donate it to the 4NCL or even sell it; otherwise I suspect Alex & co will continue on their merry way with the current system

Another complication is that teams from the same squad or management are expected to meet in the first round.Nick Burrows wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:47 amAlso, the opening weekends teams can be unrepresentive of a squads strength accross the season.

I know I am three pages late but I was surprised by the question. Is Swiss manager now so widely adopted that Chess Results has become a de facto standard and it is notable if an event does not use it?

It certainly seems that way when you look at the vast number of UK events that now appear daily on chessresults, even going so far as local and club events featuring there.Paul Cooksey wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 7:44 pmI know I am three pages late but I was surprised by the question. Kind of good to have a centralised hub but also, given the established history over the last 30 years of chess websites abruptly closing down, also feels worryingly like a lot of eggs in one basket

You are correct. If Swiss Manager were to go down, I believe FIDE would find itself in difficulties.Joey Stewart wrote: ↑Wed Jan 28, 2026 5:52 amKind of good to have a centralised hub but also, given the established history over the last 30 years of chess websites abruptly closing down, also feels worryingly like a lot of eggs in one basket
When I was Secretary and then Chair of QC I mentioned this repeatedly in reports to FIDE Council, and to Makro and Arkady personally. Nobody was interested.
I also warned them about Olimpbase, which contains a huge amount of historical information that FIDE itself lost many years ago during an office move. That site does indeed appear to have gone down, perhaps irrecoverably.

It is somewhat concerning that chess-results dot com is a single point of failure along with Swiss Manager and that FIDE does not give a jot about that.

Very good news. Wonder what happened to cause the long hiatus? Maybe as a community chess players should help ensure more backups and redundancy and continuity and disaster planning (well, and play chess as well). Some national and international bodies take this seriously. Their examples could be followed.
