4NCL move rate is 40 moves in 90 minutes and then another 30 minutes. There's a 30 second increment. Nominal default time is after 60 minutes but it would seem the arbiters, opposing captain and player allowed Danny to play.
Jack Rudd is notorious for ending games with more time than he started with.
Traffic delays once resulted in my being nearly an hour late for a 4NCL match. I think I may have had 40 minutes remaining rather than 30, but I felt that with the extra 20 minutes given by the increment to move 40, I had around an hour to reach that move Not greatly faster than the pace I might play at in an evening league game.

I presume that Gormally still lost, then.

Yes. In the youtube video link (see Loz's post) Danny explains that he could have simply accepted the default because it had already been decided that there would be no extra default penalty. However no one told him that, and since Danny went to his board as soon as he arrived, one can imagine that no one had the opportunity to do so. All rather unfortunate.
It does sound as though Danny's team must have asked for extra default penalties to be waived, and that Alba's team didn't, for it is hard to understand why a request from Alba would not have been granted.

I certainly wouldn't have asked for Alba to be penalised by anything more than the loss of the games in question had I been asked. Their captain kept me updated on the Friday night & on Saturday afternoon once he became aware of the players being unable to make it. I mentioned to him on the Sunday at breakfast that if any input from me was required to that end I would be happy to support any appeal.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 9:36 pmIt does sound as though Danny's team must have asked for extra default penalties to be waived, and that Alba's team didn't, for it is hard to understand why a request from Alba would not have been granted.
