Chess on a Liner

Post by Richard James » Thu Dec 12, 2024 11:39 am

The chess match played on a liner in 1930 between the Imperial Chess Club and Lord Kylsant's Companies has been discussed here before.

I've now done some research into the participants, in which I confirm the identity of LAS Howell, whose draw with Sir Richard Barnett was published at the time, as well as providing what I believe to be the full names of the prominent lady player of the time, Miss M Andrews.

I am reading the article, and very much enjoying it. Lovely potted biographies and depictions of the personalities and people involved in this match. Love the picture of Mrs Wheelwright thinking!

From research I did earlier this year, the liners which set sail to America in queen Victorias reign often advertised chess and draughts tables and boards, whist was usually mentioned also.

In case anyone is interested in maritime chess generally, I recall a two edition rapid tournament held on a ferry in transit between Harlingen (Dutch mainland) and Terschelling (an island of the West Frisians) ...

May 1990 - 1st Doeksen - 50 mins per game - 1st Timman 3/3, then Nunn 2, Hodgson 1, Van der Wiel 0 (4).

May 1991 - 2nd Doeksen - 50 mins per game - 1st Korchnoi 2/3, then Piket, Timman 1.5, Winants 0.5 (4).

Played on the boat 'Friesland', with Doeksen being the shipping line and main sponsor.

What was the result of the game between Korchnoi and Winants?

There's half a point missing from the total score. Korchnoi actually got 2.5 points according to the Belgian Chess History website (although they've incorrectly said he got 2 points by winning 2 games and drawing one).

Thanks, now it makes sense. Ignore my tongue-in-cheek question!

Ah yes, thanks for that correction Ian. I probably used that source without checking the veracity of the table.
