Five players includes switching round in a four-player team. Am I right that it used to be possible to take 6 players and have 2 reserves, or am I misremembering that. Maybe that was for longer tournaments, or they (FIDE) stopped allowing that?

There used to be six player squads, yes.

Matthew Sadler has been publishing books (on computer chess) and was blogging and producing YouTube videos regularly until a few months ago:

There are 515 videos on his YouTube channel. Inactive over the board, but I would say that that still counts as significant chess activity.

The fact that the best chess engines can now apparently (from the April 2024 blog) give knight odds to strong grandmasters and still manage a couple of wins at casual blitz time controls is a bit scary (David Navara still won the match overall).
