She has been in chess all her life and was a world champion and on that basis her experiences and thoughts are of value.
That's true up to a point, but not beyond it...

1. It's still an appeal to authority rather than evidence
2. Her playing experience is not recent
3. There is no particular reason to consider her an authority on cheating
4. She has form in the field of unevidenced statements.

So I think we could (and should, and maybe need to) do better than this.

As for what constitutes an argument this gave me a golden excuse to watch one of my favourite Monty Python sketches again so thanks for that.
My pleasure, I did have it in mind.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

(I could add that if we are to admit appeals to experience, I have decades of experience listening to football and cricket pundits, and one thing it has taught ne is that having been a great player in your day does not automatically make your opinions on the contemporary game of unimpeachable value. I do not think this is an unusual conclusion to come to.)

Oh dear, when will it end

This is what is siad
President of the Norwegian Chess Federation admits to cheating during Pro Chess League on chessdotcom.
Is that a voluntary confession, or was he about to be outed by chess.com?

How many other officials of national chess federations, or FIDE itself, does chess.com have evidence against?

Hi Justin,

We may have got our intentions wrong. I was not trying to side track the conversation
It appeared Anand thinks three moves given secretly were enough to win a game
(I took +100 as over a period of time.) I said it could be done.

I can see you are busy and on a more quiet day I'll get back to you regarding how it is very
possible, even with all the current security measures in place including a W.C. final
to tell a player that there is a very good move, on the board.
The arbiter I spoke to spotted a small flaw so maybe not in every tournament but
yes in a W.C. final because I'd know long a time in advance where it was and who was taking part.

The only drawback is one hot shot wonders rarely appear in top level games where the money is
(and it's the money I'm chasing not 100 elo) but a player knowing he won't miss 'something' will
have a big edge going into a game. And I could nudge them more than thrice during a game.
But this thread has more tracks than Crewe junction. I may do a new thread.

Now get back on the chess.com report, I'm not going to bother reading it, I'll take in
your abridged version and agree with you (that way I guarantee a quiet life.)

On a side note, I wonder how long it will be before we hear about some sort of sanction for our home grown OTB cheat - the lad who came within a round of stealing the British Under 16 Championship at the beginning of August?
Unless someone is willing to stand up and ask searching questions at the ECF AGM, I doubt that we shall hear any more about it.
I would expect any such questions to be declared out of order.
Hi Kevin,

There was a bit of a delay in removing the player from the tournament (the lad running
it had to contact Jack for a reminder on what to do..) and upon reflection I thought they must have an official policy in place regarding minors to avoid publicity and a possible serious tragedy.
(Adults handle much better seeing themselves in a poor light on social media. Children take it very seriously.)
I made a few enquiries and apparently not, though don’t take that as there not being one in place.
However I suspect a discreet letter has been sent and that should be the end of it in my opinion.

Tim Krabbé has provided a bit of humour as light relief (at Carlsen's expense) in an otherwise very distressing situation.

You still need a stooge with access to the game, engine analysis and the players. It would seem reasonable for organisers to ensure that no-one is in that position.

It might be worth another thread, but allegations of game fixing, Norm and rating fixing are starting to emerge or perhaps re-emerge. That goes back well before the computer era, one might recall the doubts about how Taimanov qualified to lose 6-0.

Having expended 75 p on the Daily Star today, I was impressed to see the headline on Page 9 relating to the story, "Daylight throbbery on the chessboard".

The reporter was Nadeem Badshah, "Board Games Correspondent", a freelance, writing for a wide variety of publications.

Nothing to do with the article, but I agree with, "You can't just pluck claims out of nowhere and say it's up to people to disprove them.", but it does apply to everyone.

A clue: think of how much money is involved and who is guarding the guards.
(and that is just one method and not the one I have in mind.)

Leave it for now, the weather in Edinburgh is fine, I'm off to sail my yacht
and forget about everything for a few hours. I'll do a new thread.

Chess24 report including this sentence.
“Anything that happens in this conversation will remain confidential”, Chess.com wrote in the correspondence they include as "Exhibit C".
That one has gone into my file of prospective evidence in a future CAS case.

I'm not sure that's true, and in any case it would get the question into the minutes.

When looking for something else on the ECF website I came across documents describing the the ECF's anti-cheating policy/ procedures both OTB and online (separate documents). These can be found at https://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-cont ... cument.pdf and https://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-cont ... _final.pdf. The first document specifies a maximum suspension period of 2 years for a junior aged between 14 and 18 years old. Interestingly, the suspension periods for online cheating are much less and this relates in part to the fact that the cheating detection relies in part on the initial cheating detection being done by the platform.

She [ Susan Polgar ] is giving her opinion based on the evidence so far. It's what she believes.
The second half is no doubt true, but her beliefs are not based on any evidence - at least, none that she is able or willing to reference. They are just that, her beliefs.

She may be right, that there are some people who would simply refuse to accept any hard evidence of cheating ( although I don't think I have come across any of these ). However, that cannot be tested until the first piece of such evidence comes to light.
