Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2
When I first accessed it I was able to see more of it than I can now, and I think (or I might have gathered off Twitter) it said that he had cheated much more than he ssid, that this included money events and that he had confessed to this. I saw the year 2020 mentioned but nothing about being 17.
None of that seems to me to change anything, since it's what they already knew - as per my remarks above, if it hade Hans persona non grata then why wasn't that so in August 2022. But there was a bit more about analysis they had done on some OTB games that they felt merited further investigation, which might be very interesting if I could read it. (EDIT: I see Matt and Roger have touched on this above.)

Think it’s 6 OTB events they highlight for further investigation. Probably the big gainers like the US Junior Champs, but I’ve not seen the report.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 9:30 pmWhen I first accessed it I was able to see more of it than I can now, and I think (or I might have gathered off Twitter) it said that he had cheated much more than he ssid, that this included money events and that he had confessed to this. No, though I have a tool that works on the Telegraph (but not the Times).
EDIT...and not the WSJ.

Click on the X and you can see the full article. The data is slightly selective in my view with the games that suggest he cheated. We can't see the win ratio and rise in grade online and there is too much money involved here. Especially OTB there needs to be actual proof and to factor in lockdowns. This is fascinating but if Niemann is innocent, also terrible.

He claimed he cheated when he was 16 and never whilst streaming. The report says he cheated aged 17 & whilst streaming. Bizarre that he would lie in his public confession, when it was obvious it could soon be refuted.
It also says he has "the fastest and biggest increase in his score over time and in comparison to his peers" in classical otb games aged between 11-19. Ahead of both Bobby Fischer and Magnus Carlsen.

I've seen this claim (or something like it) made repeatedly since this business started.Nick Burrows wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 10:12 pmIt also says he has "the fastest and biggest increase in his score over time and in comparison to his peers" in classical otb games aged between 11-19. Is it actually statistically correct, then?
And if so, *how* much better?? Somebody, somewhere, must hold this record quite legitimately after all.

More than that, he's on YouTube being flagged while streaming. Is there a quote from him?Nick Burrows wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 10:12 pmHe claimed he cheated when he was 16 and never whilst streaming. EDIT: In fact in his interview, he says
four years later, when I was 16 years old during my streaming career, in an absolutely ridiculous mistake,
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

There's a certain lack of Russian or Soviet players on the list. I'd suspect they are using the FIDE International Elo list. Given that it's relatively recent that it started at 1000, the early development of a lot of players would be missed. They could get Fischer on the list using the older USCF Elo ratings, but where are Kasparov, Karpov, Kramnik, Karjakin etc? The first three were the other side of 2200 or more when they first appeared. Becoming a top 100 GM at the age of 19 is bu no means unusual, you could even say it's an average performance.

Why not check it out for yourself from the games listed on chessgames.com, it only takes a few seconds?Nick Burrows wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 10:12 pm

Fischer is shown with around 400 games in eight years up to his crushing vistory at 19 in the Stockholm interzonal 1962, when he was at least in the world top six.
Niemann is shown with around 600 games and is still only world No 41.

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2
I have succeeded in reading the piece. In re: the Global Championship it says
andNiemann last month questioned why he was banned from the Chess.com Global Championship, a million-dollar prize event. Shortly thereafter, Rensch wrote a letter to Niemann explaining that “there always remained serious concerns about how rampant your cheating was in prize events” and that there was too much at stake.
I'm sure that last bit is true but unless there's anything else on the subject in the report it seems plain that Niemann wasn't kicked out on the basis of any new information received, but because it suited Chessdotcom's interests to suddenly reverse their view on his acceptability. The report also addresses the relationship during the saga between Carlsen and Chess.com, which is buying Carlsen’s “Play Magnus” app for nearly $83 million. The report says that while Carlsen’s actions at the Sinquefield Cup prompted them to reassess Niemann’s behavior, Carlsen “didn’t talk with, ask for, or directly influence Chess.com’s decisions at all.”

When I went in (and I have never used the site), I could just click the X and read the article. I have obviously clicked too many times now and cannot read it again.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 9:59 pmI am not at all sure what you mean.Stephen Westmoreland wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 9:52 pmClick on the X and you can see the full article.
