Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2
How does this function as a valid argument?
“His over-the-board progress has been unusual, and throughout our game in the Sinquefield Cup I had the impression that he wasn’t tense or even fully concentrating on the game in critical positions, while outplaying me as black in a way I only think a handful of players can do. This game contributed to changing my perspective.”
That's unconvincing by the world champion. The more I read his statement, the less impressed I become.

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2
The second paragraph of the 'Dear Chess World' statement from Magnus.
"I want to continue to play chess at the highest level in the best events."
A match for the world title is the highest level and the tournaments qualifying
to take part in the title match are right up there amongst the best events.
And yet he, who wants to play chess at the highest level, has walked away from
defending his world title because he was bored defending it.
Eh?

My goodness, that was painful. Even worse than watching Naka, which I didn't think was possible.Gerard Killoran wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 8:53 amBen Finegold sums up most of what I've been trying to say...

All the same, in fifteen minutes he makes the central point which could have been made in thirty seconds. If Carlsen had won against Niemann, would he still have withdrawn from the tournament? Answers on a postcard, please.

He's - having nil evidence - being very careful indeed not to actually accuse of him of cheating in that game.MJMcCready wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 8:50 amHow does this function as a valid argument?

That bit is probably best read as an illustration of how hard it can be to play against someone once you suspect them of cheating.

People seem to be enjoying using the Let’s Check feature on Chessbase. Since January 2020 Carlsen is supposed to have had 2 100% OTB games and 2 in the 90’s. Hans is on 10 100% games and 23 in the 90’s apparently.

Although Hans' figures are from far more games, I think, having discussed this in the small and insomniac hours on Twitter last night. By the way it's not clear to me (I've never used nor seen the feature) what constitutes a "100% game" and I may not be alone in this.

I suppose the flip side is even if the numbers don’t prove anything, why isn’t any other player getting similar results? Hikaru raised the point in his stream. And over time will Hans with increased cheating detection be able to hit any 90’s and 100’s ever again?JustinHorton wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 12:36 pmAlthough Hans' figures are from far more games, I think, having discussed this in the small and insomniac hours on Twitter last night. Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2
I linked to the same Boris Avrukh tweet and asked questions about the Let's Check facility upthread. Other of Niemann's 100% games have been found to contain inaccuracies by Niemann (FM Ingvar Johannesson discusses some of the games on his YouTube channel) and I can't help wonder if the results are dependent on what engine is available to Let's Check and on what hardware the facility is run. If different people are producing Let's Check scores for different players - so that the performances of the players can be compared - are the score calculations under the exact same conditions?JustinHorton wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 12:36 pmAlthough Hans' figures are from far more games, I think, having discussed this in the small and insomniac hours on Twitter last night. What's it supposed to mean though? 100% of what? I tried to find something online that said so - OK five in the morning perhaps wasn't the best time for this - but couldn't. (I should add I wanted to know, i.e. see a description either from Chessbase or somebody who understood the tool. I didn't and don't want to guess.)

Doesn't that need to tell you all you need to know about its likely reliability?

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2
Quite likely, but still, if its numbers are going to be hawked around it's as well to know how it comes to them.
