I can remember the late Benny Hill reporting that he had been disqualified from the World Tiddlywink championship because he tiddled when he should have winked.ThomasEvans wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 9:29 pmIn a pub quiz I once had the question "Vladimir Kramnik was a world champion in chess, and in which other game?" - the answer was given as Tiddlywinks. I never did find any citation to that claim.

Re: Pub Quiz Question
Taking my cue from the question about Vladimir Kramnik, I wonder whether the following has been set as pub quiz question in some form.
Prior to 2010 (or 2017 if you think that Twenty20 is biffing and not cricket, or 2019 if you also insist on a male), who was England's only World Cup winning first class cricketer?
Nothing to do with chess, sorry. I am also half expecting that someone will point out that my expected answer is in fact worthy of -10 points from Sandi Toksvig.

If you are the right age, that's a fairly easy one.Richard Thursby wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 10:23 pmwho was England's only World Cup winning first class cricketer?

Re: Pub Quiz Question
My inability at answering pub quizzes is only exceeded by my inability to set challenging pub quiz questions.
It was only afterwards that I realised there is a second meaning to "World Cup winning" relating to the person concerned (although some may argue that it was "won" by an official born in the same city as a World Chess Champion).

Re: Pub Quiz Question
Would 'Which former world chess champion had a bottle smashed over his head in a restaurant in Havana Cuba in 66?' qualify as a good pub quiz question? Anyone care to answer?

It was the one and only Misha, of course. Womaniser, alcoholic, and transcendent chess genius.

Not sure if he was bald at 30, might have started thinning on top then.

He got a hat trick for England, but scored no runs and took no wickets in his only county cricket appearance for Essex.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 10:47 pmIf you are the right age, that's a fairly easy one.Richard Thursby wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 10:23 pmwho was England's only World Cup winning first class cricketer?

Re: Pub Quiz Question
This is the sort of question that leads into the linguistic question of whether an adjective phrase like "World Cup-winning" can be separated from the noun phrase that follows it.

Peter Svidler. This once played a part in the opening ceremony at Gibraltar.

Yeah, can't quite remember who first invited him to county cricket matches, suspect it was Short but not sure.

Peter Svidler himself confirmed to me that it was Nigel Short who sparked his interest in cricket.MJMcCready wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 7:21 pmYeah, can't quite remember who first invited him to county cricket matches, suspect it was Short but not sure.
I am not sure about the invitations to county matches though. Short has lived abroad for nearly thirty years.
