He was not in the New Zealand team, for whatever reason.

According to the New Zealand Chess Federation, Ben Hague was picked for the top board. But some reason didn't play.

I gather that external sponsors were found to cover the Olympiad players - so the event was at least a success in that regard! Subject to what I always say about it being nice to know who funds and supports English chess, well done to Malcolm for finding the sponsorship.

I was wandering why he didn't play any games even though he was picked on top board?

Hungary and Ukraine are through to the quarter-finals after knocking out Germany and China respectively in armageddon games.

China were quite unlucky to find India and then Ukraine barring their path to the quarterfinals. Still, if you are intending to win the whole thing, you have to beat anyone in your way.

So, looking at the Gaprindashvilicup from Baku 2016, we have:

Ukraine (1) v USA (2) to play the winners of
Russia (4) v Hungary (10)

Poland (5) v Azerbaijan (7) to play the winners of
India (6) v Armenia (didn't play)

Of the top 10, only China (3), France (8) & Iran (9) haven't made the quarter finals

I suspect with the teams we have here, though, Russia are favourites

I advise careful study of the final two moves of both armageddon games. White's 38th in the Germany v Hungary game, if Chessbomb has it right, is especially notable.
