4th game of the first Lasker-Steinitz match 1894.
Not to mention a number of Karpov-Korchnoi games. Might have been some in Kramnik-Leko as well.
Yes 8th and 10th games at Merano 1981 and the 5th but not Kramnik-Leko I think, though I have not done an exhaustive search in all world title matches.
If you include the dodgy FIDE knockout world ch tournaments there were presumably other instances.
Why were they dodgy? How could won search a database just for WC matches?

They were (are!) massive knockout events. Claimed as 'real' WC's during some bout of daft FIDE politics. Not considered as such by anyone serious. Nowadays they've stopped pretending that and they're just events.

Limiting to just WC matches on a database easy enough via finding some list of the matches first.

The comp online seems to think Carlsen has dodged the worst of it now.

Another draw in the end, but again not dull.

Carlsen lucky to get the draw apparently he forgot to write down a move and when playing what he thought was his 39th move was in fact his 40th. It got him confused and like a lot of us would have done played an extra move just to make sure he'd made 40 moves and headed off to the bathroom. It could have cost him as 41 Kg2 was a huge mistake. Chance for Karjakin though which he didn't take. https://chess24.com/en/read/news/carlse ... -screws-up

Chess Mind game 5 analysis

TWIC
Carlsen admitted he made errors "I was lucky" and seemed very disappointed with his play.
It seemed to fizzle out quite quickly, form black having an advantage to a draw; not sure what to make of it in the context of the match overall, maybe both players disappointed?

Karjakin has 2 whites now in the middle of the match, which will be interesting to see if he can get any opening advantage this time

A background piece from the Guardian, written before game 5.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/ ... y-karjakin

The headline is
World Chess Championship: political intrigue lurks as battle reaches midway
, referring to Kirsan's absence and Karjakin's status as Ukrainian turned Russian.

They don't seem to find it interesting that "Brooklyn’s Fabiano Caruana" was for a while Italian for chess purposes.

If the challenger were British and "an avowed supporter of Teresa May and Brexit", I presume The Guardian would consider that a matter of political intrigue.

They are being bold when they refer to Kirsan's ties to the Central bank of Syria without the customary "alleged". He strenuously denies this and the US Treasury have admitted that they have only some press cuttings as evidence.

That’s because it isn’t particularly. Well it is to us, but it has no geo-political significance so not really going to be that worthy of comment to a mainstream news audience in this particularly context. Had there been fisticuffs in Italy with America involved (or vice versa) I suspect it things may have been different .

Might also have got a mention in an "aren’t chess players funny" type of article of that accompanied Nigel Davies changing federation back to Wales, I suppose.

Possibly not in this instance as it seems to be from the US branch of the Guardian's operations. (Note for instance "mold" instead of "mould".)

"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Daniel King @DanielKingChess
#CarlsenKarjakin A strange game. Throughout it seemed that Carlsen forgot that Karjakin could play for a win. And Karjakin forgot too.

Any link to US Treasury statements confirming this?
I would not have thought that sanctioning decisions are taken so lightly...

Thanks but I would not read that info exactly as "the US Treasury have admitted that they have only some press cuttings as evidence".

No, neither would I

At least the US Treasury has put him on the list, our Government doesn't seem interested

An anti-Marshall with h3, but Carslen played .. d5 anyway, giving up the e5 pawn.

They've rattled out the moves so far very quickly.
