World Junior Championship:
David Howell is representing England in this prestigious event from 21st October to 4th November and is being seconded by Nigel Short. I hope to be able to provide a website address next week but there doesn't appear to be an official site that I can find. Hopefully there will be some coverage on the ECF site and also via TWIC and chessbase.

Although my limited French (which doesn't extend beyond Arsenal players and a few basic phrases) has made navigating the site more difficult I've been informed of the following results: Simon Williams won both games against Nikolai Noniv rated 2532 and Ismael Karim rated 2410. Simon Ansell won both against Pierre Villegas rated 2236 and Bogomil Andonov rated 2294.

Congratulations to David Spence who finished second equal with 7/9. Paul Hutchinson and Alan Walton scored 5.5, Peter Tart 5, Graham Burton and Norman Hutchinson 4.5.
In addition to the individual websites the latest international chess news can be found at the following link:

Apologies in advance if next week's round-up is somewhat briefer. I'll include anything I miss out in the following week's round-up when I'm back from Serbia.

Re: International Round Up 20/10/09
Good stuff as always, Loz, thanks.
One thing to add - the Guernsey Festival (18-24 Sep) is in progress. At the official home page - www.guernseychessclub.org.gg/festival - you can follow the round-by-round results. In fact, you can follow the results for the entire 35 years of the event using the website's superb online database - a statistician's delight. This year three GMs - Tiger Hillarp Persson (SWE 2577), Oleg Korneev (RUS 2554) and Bojan Kurajica (BIH 2517) - and one IM - Robert Bellin (ENG 2388) - are taking part. Latest: after three rounds, Hillarp Persson, Kurajica, Samuel Franklin (ENG 2131) and Wolfgang Mack (GER 2257) are all on 3/3. The round featured two shocks, as Mack beat GM Korneev and 15-year-old Samuel Franklin beat IM Bellin. No game downloads available as yet - no doubt these will appear shortly after the tournament. (If anyone is suffering from deja vu, it is probably because I have also posted this message at the BCM website)

Re: International Round Up 20/10/09
I cannot find a website for the World Junior - pretty poor if you ask me. Chessdom have the pairings for round 2, which show David won round 1 and faces a 2475 in round 2
Howell - Yilmaz (Tur) 2475
I'd be interested if anybody else has more up-to-date results

Re: International Round Up 20/10/09
According to this site http://www.ajedrez.com.ar/ their server has collapsed. They tried to do live games yesterday under the "paritdas en vivo" section yesterday but I wasnt able to see any moves. The site was OK this morning for getting the basic results but I just tried to click the link for Round 3 pairings but it was broken. Very disappointing.

Using James Coleman's link, it looks like David Howell is on 2.5 after 3 rounds. Anyone read Spanish?

Re: International Round Up 20/10/09
Yes, I can, thanks! What needs translating?
One interesting point - they are not using FIDE's zero default time rule in the World Junior. It says quite clearly "Start / Comienzo 17:00 am - Tolerance/Tolerancia 15 minutes". I'm pretty sure that means you get 15 minutes to get to the board after start time.
The best way to follow the results is to use the excellent chess-results.com website - click here for the latest standings. David does indeed have 2½/3.

Re: International Round Up 20/10/09
And I see Samuel Franklin continued his excellent performance at Guernsey with 5.5/7 for 2=, including a draw with GM Tiger Tillap-Persson today.
