London Draughts Club
The Club is now closed and as most of you know we were based in the Grotto Club for over 20 years, but now sadly our tenure has come to an end. We are now faced with a daunting challenge to find a new venue, and I would be very grateful for players and ex-players in the London area to let me have their thoughts as to how we might find a suitable venue.
Up until now we have basically looked at local libraries, but unlike before we came to the Grotto Club, now libraries close at 8 p.m., so playing is just not possible. We have considered playing in a pub, such as a spacious pub like Wetherspoon’s, but players thought this would not be suitable as quietness would not be possible. Ideally we would like to be able to share a few tables in a Chess Club, but up to now having taken soundings, results have not been too optimistic.
We are now down to 6 players regularly attending so our position to negotiate with any other Club is very weak in terms of what they would expect to get from us. Our Chess counterparts would have a pretty saucy membership fee, and they would probably expect us to join up as members.
Jim McCarthy, Flat 6, 2 Fountayne Road, Stoke Newington, London N16 7DX. Tel. 0208-806-0102.

I don't know how well this suggestion would work, but have they thought of joining forces with a board game club?

"Some people are good enough at chess to take it seriously; you are not one of them."
