International Round Up 29/9/09

Nigel Short v Zahar Efimenko Match 20 - 26 September 2009 Mukachevo (Ukraine) organised by UEP:

After the shock of losing game 1 with white in an unrecognisable manner to the great form he has shown in 2009 Nigel bounced back by winning with black in round 2 and then winning with white in game 5. He was also very close to a win in game 3 and had two comfortable holds in the other black games. He therefore achieved a deserved match victory by 3.5-2.5.

David Howell finished on 2/9 against an average opponent of 2609. Regrettably, David lost all 5 games with black but at least showed his character by continuing to battle and won his last round in nice entertaining style.

Gawain Jones is playing in this IM tournament which has an average of 2332. He is currently on 2.5/4 after a surprise loss in round 2 to Mike Steadman.
