Last year she "only scored 4.0/13, but that was good enough to win 10 rating points". This year's Challengers is stronger and she will be lucky to do as well.

Third win in a row for Carlsen defeating Eljanov in a complex game where black took risks to unbalance the position and was ultimately rewarded. Tomashevsky-Adams was an uneventful draw and Navara-Karjakin was also drawn but with a bit more happening.Mick Norris wrote:Round 7 today

The outcome of Nisipeanu v Haast was somewhat unexpected on previous form

Re: Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee 15-31 January 2016
The commentators, Svidler and the German guy, took time out from the main event to take a look at the game. What they were saying was that although Black's position looks promising, that with the right moves, White can consolidate and be better. That's not what happened.Matt Mackenzie wrote:The outcome of Nisipeanu v Haast was somewhat unexpected on previous form
For future reference, here's the game.

In the interview I linked to, above, Anne Haast criticised Nisipeanu's 10.d4. However, that move seems only dubious. There was much worse to come... 15.Nf3? was the losing move. Instead 15.Bxf4 would have left the top-rated GM in the Challengers still able to play for a draw - having made a fruitless pawn sacrifice with 12.e5.

He deserves credit for analysing the game afterwards, I suspect that many players (probably myself included) wouldn't have relished the post mortem.John McKenna wrote:Nisipeanu played like Haast has been playing. After today's miracle Ann should be a prime candidate for beatification.

Very nice Knight manoeuvre at the end of the Anne Haast game.
