Jovanka Houska's performance so far deserves a highlight:

Indeed, she's currently ranked second on board 1 rating performance whilst Gawain is third among the board 4 performances.

It would be annoying if the default win over Anna Muzychuk (no fault of Muzychuk - it was travel problems, I believe) led to Jovanka's performance not being eligible for a GM norm calculation. Has she got a GM norm before, I seem to remember that but might be confusing it with a WGM norm?

I'd be surprised if she had any chance of a title norm. Jovanka has been clinical against the lower rated players but she's only played one player higher that her rating of 2391 who she drew with. http://chess-results.com/tnr191480.aspx ... 821&snr=35 Mind you I can see a performance rating of 2640 so maybe she can?

The default win in round one made any norm opportunity somewhat problematic but a board prize is certainly a possibility.

Does the default win count towards the board prize?

The default doesn't matter due to the following regulation

Only 7 games are required for 8 or 9 round World Team and Continental Team Championships.

It was more that if Houska had played Muzychuk, she would have had 2 GMS played so far. Though she would have been unlikely to get a third anyway (11 GMs playing in the whole of the women's section: 6 on board 1; 5 on board 2; 2 on board 3; and 1 on board 4), it was that I was thinking of. I think her TPR is so high because she has scored so heavily. (She is both a WGM and IM).

It makes a big difference when there are only a small number of teams with GMs. She now needs to play two GMs in the last two rounds as opposed to one and given that there are only 7 teams with GMs and some are too far ahead for England to play then the odds must be against the pairings being kind to her two rounds in a row.

I think I was thinking of the London Classic 2011 when Jovanka just missed out on a GM norm.

I see France beat Ukraine - big result there - due to a blunder by Eljanov.

I also see Simon Williams has a beard - how long has that been there for?!? (Or is this some Movember thing?)

Gawain has allowed a tactic by his opponent, but will Tiviakov see it? (move 23)
