Re: Uxbridge International
Im guessing he might not claim the title anyway and I predict he should get 2/4 from these final 4 games given current form.
Assuming he scores 1.5/2 minimum with those 2 whites a draw with either black is not unreasonable.

Not that the FM title seems to be worth much these days. Even the ECF (as per their entry fees for the British Championship) seem to think it is only worth anything for a year...

FM is what I aspire to be , I think its worth something.......You get it put on your ICC account, which means Ill get less abuse at my blitz rating.....Which is worth having!!

It must be the opposite for IMs then! I think being an IM gets me more abuse at my blitz ratingBen Purton wrote:FM is what I aspire to be , I think its worth something.......You get it put on your ICC account, which means Ill get less abuse at my blitz rating.....Which is worth having!!

Ben, you're right that the regulaiton changed on 1st July 2009 and that I am a FIDE arbiter. But you are wrong about the rule itself. Previously you had to have a rating of 2300+ published in a rating list, bit not any more.Ben Purton wrote:Published now. Your a FIDE arbiter? Rule changed July 1st.
Taken from the FIDE webisteTitles Based on Achieved Ratings
The titles based on ratings (FM, WFM, CM, and WCM) may be achieved with a rating at any time, a
published rating, a rating within a period between tournaments and even a rating within a tournament.
Title application already gone in. Congratulations again to Peter.Ben Purton wrote:Im guessing he might not claim the title anyway...

Re: Uxbridge International
This is Great News!, Sorry for Misguided rules.
Ray Ryan in fact informed Sarah she was likely to be declined for WFM on the grounds her rating needed to be published so this is what I was going on(She gained +3 at Big Slick and then lost -5 at British). Shes been over in 2 rating periods under the rules quoted so there cannot be any decline.
Yeah well done to Peter. Another Strat with a FIDE title. Woop!

Probably the most useful aspect of the FM and WFM titles is for all-play-all organisers who want norm seekers to compliment the GM and IM players. As you need to play 5 titleds (including 3 GMs for a GM norm and 2 GMs or 3 IMs for an IM norm) they are useful as they'll pay an entry fee but they'll also help with the required number of titled players.Richard Bates wrote:Not that the FM title seems to be worth much these days. I claimed mine for the princely sum of £37.50 about 20 years ago safe in the knowledge I'd never become an IM

Re: Uxbridge International
This is of course the standard basis for FM getting reduced entry fees. I don't understand the logic for the ECF having a different policy for the British Championship - only giving reduced entry fees to people who have achieved the FM title in the last year seems to target people who might have paid the full fee anyway! (because they are actively looking for IM norms).LozCooper wrote:Probably the most useful aspect of the FM and WFM titles is for all-play-all organisers who want norm seekers to compliment the GM and IM players. Do the ECF require you to pay the money upfront, or only after the title has been agreed?Sean Hewitt wrote:

Re: Uxbridge International
Well, I know the story of at least one player with the King's Head CC, who received an invoice from the ECF (or what was then the BCF?), asking him to reimburse it for the £100 (or whatever it was) they had paid for his CM title. He replied that a) he hadn't asked for it b) he thought nothing of the title and c) given that his rating had once been over 2300 he was surprised but grateful that they hadn't applied for the FM title. As you can imagine he was never bothered again, although he is listed as a CM.Richard Bates wrote:Do the ECF require you to pay the money upfront, or only after the title has been agreed?

Nice shiny new ECF grade - but one well deserved by a fabulous season.

Haven't seen him myself for a quite a while. But then I'm not playing half as much chess as I used to.
