Looks like David and Matthew will win, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mickey does too!

Why is David's opponent shown as lost. Is it another wrong result shown.

Probably. No real reason to resign there. The computers claim it is drawn. Having said that, some of the computer lines end in a last-gasp perpetual. Maybe White thought the position was just lost?

Looking at it, I might assume I was lost but I think that I'd play some more moves at least. Mind you, he might have been fed up since he was completely winning earlier with the two passed pawns on the Q side.

Sorry, no it hasn't. My wife pointed out a position which was different and then I realised that I had clicked on analysis and hadn't removed it. Possibly the funniest moment ever and also a good reason not to let your wife look over your shoulder.

Pretty easy win from here, not too early to resign I'd say. But you know my thoughts about that subject......

Howell's game? Let's take a closer look...

Computer line is: 58. Re2+ Kf6 59. Rg2 Kg5 60. Kd6 Nf5+ 61. Ke5 Kg4 62. Ra2 Nxg3 63. Kf6 h4 64. Ra4+ Kh5 65. Ra5+ Kh6 66. Kxf7 g5 67. Ra3 g4 68. Kf6 Nh5+ 69. Kf5 g3 70. Ra6+ Kg7 71. Kg5 h3 72. Ra7+ Kh8 73. Ra8+ Kg7 74. Ra7+ Kh8 75. Ra8+ Kg7 76. Ra7+.

[Sorry, not sure how to get that in a playable format].

How do you improve on that?

They've got them set up for instant assessments. I'd guess that the search depth isn't deep enough to see the creation of a passed pawn and its subsequent advance with the "end of line" verdict doing little more than counting the material. There again, perhaps White resigned in a drawn position.

Blimey. Had a long phone conversation with the missus, when I started it it looked like England would be lucky to draw - itself something of an improvement on the situation some minutes previously - and when I finish it's 3-1. I don't suppose there's any chance Glud lost on time?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Surely you would look at it and ask would Howell agree a draw here, if that was the case?

Stop relying on the computers John, and think about it.

It is a winning position for Black. Computers have an evaluation where it tends to average out in an unclear position with many different possibilities of playing. If it was truly drawn, then the computer would either have the same evaluation throughout for its choices or when nothing has progressed assuming best moves from both sides. You can see quite clearly the computer does not show it like that.

As for no "real reason to resign" there, well, how will White defend the g-pawn and not exchange it off, since it will then mean that Black has 2 passed pawns and a knight vs rook. A winning endgame.

France won and will play China in round 10. China's players have only lost one game. France's players have lost just two games. This is the best record among the top 10 teams. China have drawn three matches. France lost one match, drew another one, and won the rest.

Don't think so, looks like he had nearly 15 minutes left. Apart from the line Chris K gave Rg1 or going around the back with Kc6 also appear to be drawn. Amazing really because as Simon says it does look completely lost at first glance.
