Surely Emms-R.Pert is a draw?

Agreed. There were a few times where Pert had to be careful. Namely the king had to be on either g7 or f6. Had he gone to e6, I think it would have lost, since the king could not re-route to h6.

Another example is when he called Rd2+ when the king was on d4. That was also very important. He seems to make the right defensive moves. I cannot see what other tries Emms can make.

Presumably Emms’ plan is to shuffle about and run Pert’s clock down. Try to make something of it on increments.

Or maybe he just likes rook ending. He did write a book on them, after all.

Am I right in thinking that either Amy Hoare or Akshaya Kalaiyalahan will be British women's champion? And if so, isn't it about time a better way was found, as it is self-evidently a very unsatisfactory way of determining the title, however well either of them may perform. If a proper tournament representation can't be conjured up, how about awarding the women's title to the best performance by a British woman in the 4NCL - which has a hugely more representative selection of female players. Almost anything would be better than the current situation.

Without wanting cut off Peter’s question, is anybody else still watching Emms - Pert?

Nah, boring rook ending, where's the fun in that?

Akshaya was playing board 6 in divison 3 sometimes this season. Given that, it would have been entirely plausible for her to rack up a 9/9 or something similar had she stayed there all season, for a performance considerably higher than any other woman would manage. For better or worse, it needs to be decided in a tournament with direct competition between those aiming for the prize, and the British Championships is the best such tournament right now.
True glory lies in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read.

I'm not sure what pairing scheme is in use, or even whether they are doing it by hand rather than by computer. The question then is why the pairing scheme threw up Hawkins v Yang-Fan rather than the potentially Hawkins assist of Hawkins v Howell?

CAA pairings, done by hand. For which the rule for selecting the upfloater (in a tournament of this length) is that you start at the median and work upwards.

But you would measure it by rating performance, not points scored. How is it a better way of doing it for the title to be decided in a tournament with only two women included who might not even play each other?

A player could be given all whites in the 4NCL and it might well happen if you started handing out British titles for the highest score/performance. In the absence of sponsorship to offer the top women an attractive all-play-all tournament it's in the hands of the organisers to make the current event appealing and financially viable.

That said I have no problem at all with England's two best girls fighting it out for both the women's and girl's titles.
