In Hawkins-Fernandez, White has just played 41.Qa1. What was wrong with 41.Ra1? (Ah! 41...Nb5 - missed that)

Heh. Ward-Rudd is still going on. Jack has 1 hour 50 minutes versus 12 minutes for Chris Ward (currently at move 46). EDIT: Actually, the extra time after move 40 might not have been added on yet? Not sure...

Looks another mature GM scalp to me.

Carl, I think it's a draw. As yesterday my judgement may be influenced by G&T, but at the moment (move 53) I don't see how he will stop the N just taking the g pawn.

Yeah Jack should be completely winning, but I don't understand why he didn't play 46...d3, keeping the d-pawn, before taking on c4.

edit: oh he's lost the a-pawn. How did that happen?!

I just put Simon W's position into Hiarcs after 49... Ne8 and it says:

1.Ke5: White wins in 34 moves
1.Ke6: White wins in 35 moves

1.Kf5: Draw
1.Ke7: Draw
1.Kf7: Draw

No idea why those particular 2 moves out of the 5 possible should win. Bloody computers.

Pity about Jack's game.

The position in Williams-Fernandez from move 49 onwards can be put into online tablebases, such as here:

Heineken iPhone analysis not the best then.

I didn't see the drawing idea until it was too late. Ah well.

(Mind you, I was lucky to get out of the early middlegame alive.)

Apologies if this was mentioned earlier, but the game Fraser-Jarmany displays the result that it is a Black win. However upon looking at the final position on the live boards, it is rather puzzling to see how this came about.

The only explanation I can see is that White must have missed Qd4 (not too hard to spot I would have thought) as a defence. Does anyone know more about this?

You could also speculate that he lost on time. Whilst there are GM experts on playing with little time who know exactly how long is thirty seconds, losing on time is still possible with increments particularly for players relatively unfamiliar with them.

It was definitely a loss on time

Ah. A pity then. Will be a hard lesson in terms of time management for sure.

Maybe I come from a different era, but there seem to be a lot of players who have delayed resignation today until it became almost disrespectful. This is the British after all, not a random quickplay!

You don't have to be a GM expert (or Jack Rudd in the opening! ) to play with 30 second increments, though I appreciate you probably do need a fair amount of experience to be able to play with this with relative ease. The fall back of simply playing what looks like reasonable moves all the time is not a bad ploy, with the main calculations work being done in the opponent's time.

Indeed, in one of my games in the recent World Deaf Team Championships, I was in time trouble in round 2, where some of my team members were panicking as they watched my clock going down to 10 seconds at one point (to be fair it was at a very critical point in the game)! It was a reasonably tough middlegame-endgame working with 2 minutes and increment most of the time. One would have to be a reasonably mature chess player to remain calm(ish!) in these situations.

Having said that, in terms of me being experienced, I can say to a (small!) number of competitors in the British: "I started playing chess before you were born!"
