Watch out for chessboard references during the Brazil-Croatia match tonight.

it has to be said that the Croatian shirts are likely to provoke such comments...

Geoff Boycott on England v Sri Lanka: "It's a five-day Test match. It's like chess, you can't win a chess match in two or three moves but you can sure as hell get yourself into trouble."

I have known Sam Sloan for 50 years. A slightly more than somewhat controversial figure in chess. Could he get elected - not to FIDE, but to congress - I mean the US one?

Doubt that even the present day GOP would have him.

I saw a TV ad for X-box One. There is a chessboard and set in the background.

I don't know why.

Saturday Times Magazine 21 June 2014.

Dr Peter Bach, 'We were finally caught in cancer's zugswang, the point in the game where all possible moves make you worse off.'

I think that is he first time I have come across zugswang, apart from in the context of a game such as draughts. In bridge they used 'throw-in', where the player has to play away from his strength when it is his turn to play.

I have asked military personnel whether zugswang every arises in warfare.
