From what I can remember, 3.... Nc6 is a better idea, but I haven't play against it for years, presumably it is better for black if he knows his stuff

Yes, 1 Nf3 players hardly ever get the chance to play this line, though I remember Tony Pawson turning it into a Latvian Counter with 1 Nf3 f5, 2 e4 e5. against me. My excuse is that I totally missed that Martina could play Re4+, after which Fritz thinks I am already worse! It was interesting game. Thanks to Mark White for mentioning, straight after the game, that I could have saved myself 4 hours by repeating moves on move 10!

Botwinnik published some faulty analysis of the Pirc-Lissitsyn (can't rememebr preferred spelling) Gambit in "Modern Chess Theory" (a short-lived magazine in 70s I think) claiming white was better, but black has some good lines, where he wins a pawn and keeps it.

There is always that 2 d3 refinement, which might even lay claim to being vaguely trendy/approved.

Nice Spirit report on the main 4NCL website. "The League of the region of post-industrial dereliction" :) Explains their Sheffield/ Chesterfield connection too which I did briefly wonder about at the event.

Any northern teams looking for a patzer to fill in on the bottom board when you're short, I would love to get involved.

We have 2 new Manticores in the squad, bringing us up to 18, so the squad depth is now more comfortable

We should be stronger for weekend 2, which will probably be needed as it sounds like some other teams will be too

Good stuff :) Jorvik's rotation policy has logically mutated so will be fielding the same team for both matches but anyone's guess who'll be playing on a given weekend......

NE1 probably won't be notably stronger in absolute sense but NE2 could be if more of the players turn out. Imagine they'll be motivated to try with the fixtures as they are. Spirit do at least look likely to get some relatively soft matches during the third weekend!

Well NE2 did their job but NE1 didn't :) NE1/Spirit both looking very serious for promotion of course.

Definitely not a soft touch in the North this season. Spirit/NE1 averaging just over 2050 opposition, Leeds Uni Old boys about 1950 and Guilford 1850 due to a very soft first round match. I guess that'll balance out a fair bit by the end of the season.

Impressive number of York based players in the Jorvik - Bradford B match ;)

When I was playing the e2e4 event in 2012, there is an excellent Mexican restaurant about 5 mins from the venue, Mr Arkell should confirm that
