The Gambit - a play inspired by Kasparov & Karpov
The Gambit - a play inspired by Kasparov & Karpov
Hello there,
I know this may not be quite the right board for this - I have posted in advertising as well but this does seem to be read much more...
I am writing to let you know about our forthcoming tour of 'The Gambit' by Mark Reid, produced by Rampant Plays, to be performed as part of the Bath Fringe Festival 30 May - 1 June, Manvers Street Baptist Church, and other dates in Buxton and Manchester as outlined on our website: http://thegambitplay.webs.com/tour-dates.
In the dark days of the Cold War, the two greatest chess players in the world have an encounter which tears their friendship apart. Twenty-five years on when they agree to a reunion it seems more is at stake than a lost friendship.
As the play progresses, it emerges that not everything is as it seems, the survival of the game and the future of their country is in the balance and chess is not the only game being played.
Inspired by Karpov's dramatic exit from the 1984 World Championship with Kasparov and their subsequent strained relationship, this is a tour-de-force vehicle for two immense performances, gripping and thought-provoking, but ultimately a moving portrait of a lost friendship.
We are coming from Bath straight from our Brighton run, where the show was described as "One of the unexpected treats of my fringe" by Richard Stamp, writing for FringeGuru.com.
Tickets are £7 (£5.50 concessions). We also offer a group discount of 5 tickets for the price of 4 for any English Chess Forum members contacting us after reading this. Just let us know in advance which show you would like to attend and the discounted tickets will be held for you at the door.
If there is anything else you need to know about the show, the background to the production or to any of the creative team then please feel free to contact me at any time by e-mailing [email protected].
Many thanks for your attention,
Ben Rigby

If anybody leaves London to avoid the play, as recommended by the blogger, they might end up in Manchester, which is where it's actually being performed. Worth getting the facts right if you're going to have a rant about a play you haven't seen.

To review a play that has yet to open - even in preview - is the height of bad taste.
I will be reviewing THE GAMBIT.
In the after play discussion, we speculated on why two new plays are opening, or have opened. in Manchester, both using chess and players' relationships, neither connected.
Of course we are used to sports commentators reaching for the chess metaphor shelf.

THE GAMBIT will now be performed several times in Torquay during the 100th British Chess Championships.
I hope I have warded off the possibility of descriptive notation being used by a young Kasparov in THE MACHINE.
There will be a one hour interview by Sir David Frost of Kasparov possibly in late July.
The reason for these independent displays of interest may possibly have been caused by Garry's recent political activities.

The Gambit press release
The Manchester venue is very appropriate as we used to hold meetings there a few years ago
Pleased to see a discount for members of the MCF

Big spread in The Times today (25/6) - sidebar comments by Ray who manages to get in a Goethe quote or two as well.

I understand that the play `The Gambit` by Mark Reid is being performed at Torquay during the British at the following times; 3PM and 8PM on 2nd August and 12noon 3PM and 7PM on 3rd August. Unfortunately it doesn't say exactly where.
Just declaring my interest (and I've only just made the connection) the author and myself have corresponded although we've never met - we have several mutual friends outside chess.
