I agree. I remember seeing Abram Bernfield playing in Opens and not scoring that well, then discovered he enjoyed the challenge, having been a strong player in earlier years. Once you've played Milner-Barry, Alexander and Sir George Thomas, maybe you don't want to play in Majors?
Obviously it's up to the individual.

I have recently returned to OTB after a long Covid break. My results in the 2 weekenders I have played in have been really disappointing
It certainly took me a few weekenders to get any good at them, and I suspect if I played one now (I haven't for ages) I'd struggle quite badly.
