It seems to me to be very difficult to know if this is likely to be a good event or not. There has been a proliferation of events with grandiose titles, so I am not sure how a parent or player can know which tournaments are likely to be strong, well organised events. I notice that an officially unofficial, but unofficially official England team is going to the European U18 team Championships 12th - 20th July. It is in Poland, so presumably we can expect a really strong event. England certainly have a strong team

1* 424269 FM Horton, Andrew P ENG ENG 2303 1998- -
2* 415820 Haria, Ravi ENG ENG 2261 1999- -
3* 415804 Wadsworth, Matthew J ENG ENG 2140 2000- -
4* 422509 Claridge-Hansen, William ENG ENG 2113 1999- -

Well the event is strong, the only problem is, is that 3 days before the entry deadline there are only 5 teams for a seven round event.

The U16 Olympiad has a very good pedigree, I doubt that there need be any concerns. Can't speak for the European U18 teams.

Update on the European U18 team championships - there are now 13 teams and England are seeded 12th. Looks like it will be pretty strong then!

Entry is now up to 14 teams (a team from Georgia has just been added to the list); and with ratings updated to the latest list England's team is now seeded 14th. Bearing in mind England's team rating average is (just) over 2200 I think it is safe to say it will be quite a strong tournament....!

The approved pattern in Germany seems to be that you get a GM title alongside your A levels, otherwise known as an A* in chess, and then take a schachjahr.

edit. To be fair, that is what Luke McShane did, and none of the young Germans has yet risen to his heights. We just haven't got the conveyor belt running.

And now ye have heard all that we can tell you about the Tartars... and likewise about the other countries of the world as far as our researches and information extend. (The Travels of Marco Polo translated by Sir Henry Yule)

Have two more intrepid modern-day Marco Polos been recruited for the Tartary trip, yet?

I was marginally surprised at the need for a public appeal . Whilst there are any number of players born 1999 or later, those with a rating of 1990 or above are so limited in number that they could perhaps have been contacted privately. Perhaps the ECF doesn't have contact details?

I suspect (but don't know) that the logic is that it's good to know in advance who is available rather than having to wait for a player to reply to an invitation, possibly say no, have to ask the next in line and then repeat the same process. Even with short deadlines for each it can be a frustrating process.

If a team is to be sent then information will appear on the ECF website. Failing that the question could be asked on the federation forum.

This is about to start. Did the ECF eventually succeed in raising a team?

There is no ECF team here.

My ID badge initially had me down as ENG though. I rejected it!!!

The first round should in theory be finishing around now. It looks as though we shall be reliant upon Alex for any information.

I see that Alex is Chief Arbiter of the open event taking place alongside. I can't tell who are the arbiters of the Olympiad, since of course nobody has bothered to register it.
