1990s Hastings Bulletins
A recent addition to BritBase was the 1990/91 Hastings tournament, for which I am grateful to Ian Thompson.
So far this is the one Hastings tournament from the 1990s which has featured in full on BritBase, with a crosstable for the Challengers event and game scores with dates and round numbers. Though the Hastings Premier games for this period are all generally available, both on BritBase and elsewhere, the Hastings Challengers games for the rest of the 1990s are problematic. ChessBase digitised a lot of these games many years ago but unfortunately made a mess of the job, often mixing up the games played in the January period of one tournament with those played in the December period of the next. Also, many of the games they publish are undated and/or without round numbers (probably because they were input at a time when the software didn't allow full dates).
I should like to address this problem but I am currently unable to as I don't have copies of the relevant bulletins. I'm hoping members of the forum can help by lending (or sending scans of) 1990s Hastings bulletins. Full crosstables for Challengers tournaments would also be a great help (having not seen the bulletins, I don't know whether these were included). (EDIT: I do have the 1993/94 bulletin, thanks to Ian Thompson)
All help gratefully received. As John F Kennedy said, "ask not what BritBase can do for you - ask what you can do for BritBase." I believe he also said "ich bin ein BritBaser." (I may have misquoted him slightly)
P.S. the same applies to some 1970s and 1980s Hastings tournaments - if you consult this page, you can see where the gaps are in Hastings coverage on BritBase (n.b. I do have the 1983/84 Hastings bulletin, ready to be processed)

Re: 1990s Hastings Bulletins
Good luck with this, John. I was at, I think, two Hastings tournaments in the 1990s. the 1995/6 one and one either the next year or the year after. I cannot remember if daily bulletins were handed out that included games from all events (I was in one of the subsidiary events). That is what I remember happening at the British in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but maybe not Hastings? Maybe what was produced was a single bound post-event bulletin that was sent out afterwards? If I do ever come across anything, I will send it on. Do you have photos of what these bulletins would look like? And have you considered contacting individuals that (from existing games) you know competed in the Challengers tournaments? (Or maybe that would be the next step if this appeal doesn't work?)

I only ever attended Hastings once, and grim it was in the winter. It was 1977-78. I'm not sure if there is a bulletin of the Challengers' games. I do have my games if they are of interest, including a lucky win against the late Danny Kopec.

Nick, I will gladly add your 1977/78 Challengers games to the online collection if you send them.Nick Ivell wrote: ↑Sun Aug 11, 2024 6:37 pmI only ever attended Hastings once, and grim it was in the winter. Thanks also to Roger de Coverly for sending his own scores from 1990s Hastings Challengers tournaments. These will also find their way onto BritBase in due course.

Ah, now this is more like it. Last-round swindle after leaving a piece hanging:

Re: 1990s Hastings Bulletins
Thanks, Nick. To save you the trouble of digging them out, I already have two of your games from the 1977/78 Challengers...
Here are the scores of the ones you've just posted, for which many thanks...
You (or someone else) might want to proof-read those games in case I have misinterpreted.
Thanks again.

Re: 1990s Hastings Bulletins
Thanks for your efforts, John. I'll see what else I can dig up.
All of this seems redolent of a different era. Speaking for myself, there was no specific preparation for opponents. The openings seem dodgy to say the least.
Do the juniors of today have a better positional understanding? I expect so. Certainly, 13. Bd3 surprised me from the Povah game.
