Well, Loz, Kajakin spent about 4 mins. then played 32.b3.
Wouldn't the move , 32.f6+, suggested by the resident engine have been better because it would have made Mamedyarov retreat his K?

After 32... Ke8 33.a4 Rxb2 34.a5!? White would've retained the initiative, instead Karjakin lost it and valuable time (almost 4 mins. 30 secs.), too.

It certainly looked a better try but I wasn't sure it was more than that.

Wei Yi escapes with a draw again, I can't help feeling that the chances of half-chances that Svidler has had may come back to haunt him.

Giri must be thinking that if he plays Wei Yi, all he has to do as Black is 1 e4 e5 and already =+. I suppose Yi could be ready for the candidates' next year but it's hard to believe he has the necessary knowledge and judgement just yet (even though he does have everything else, and in spades).

Interesting match between the other two.

Svidler missed big chances in the second rapid game. Two clear-cut chances to win a pawn or more, both involving switching from the f/h-file to the d-file. Clearly was too focused on that and not enough on the other possibilities. Maybe this just shows that Svidler will keep outplaying Wei Yi and eventually win, or maybe Wei Yi will seize his chance if it arises.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Peter the prefect will teach 1st-former Wei a lesson before the day is out. If not I'll be left with no skin in the game as Svidler's the last of my original 8 last picks left.

I am confident Svidler will win. The other match looks too close to call (EDIT: though now Karjakin is in control).

Svidler held whilst Karjakin won after winning a pawn early on. I'm a bit surprised that the game ended when it did but as more than one site gives the game ending there I assume it's correct.
