In the women's match, Jovanka has won again. Board 2 looks a draw, whilst Sabrina is worse on 3.

I suspect so, Qe3 briefly appeared before disappearing with 1-0 in its place.

She must have done. I had wondered whether the result was wrong and a draw had been agreed but Jovanka stands rather worse in the final position and I don't suppose that Black would even have offered a draw.

However Sabrina is now clearly losing, so even this slice of luck won't save the team. Still, a medal for Jovanka is something worth contemplating.

Looks like our Open team is going to struggle for a top ten finish, as per usual. I think we have been more solid than usual but still finding it to hard to win games on boards 2 and 3. As so often, it is a White loss, this time from an in-form player, which is our undoing. Perhaps it is just a good game from Tiviakov? I didn't know he could play the French.

Why is the ECF spending money supporting either team?

I believe Sport England cut off funding from under-performing sports. Perhaps the ECF should do the same?

I feel like a bit of a broken record, but I have never understood this. Players should want to play for their country - if they don't want to then fair enough. but no-one promised these people a living from chess and they certainly should not be expecting the ECF to provide a chunk of their revenue for representing their country.

Of course to some extent (and I know this has been disputed) the ECF provided the infrastructure and allowed these people to achieve norms, receive training and opportunities and become titled players and professionals - you would have thought there was an obligation to play 'at cost' rather than demand payment.

Anyway - my vote for a development team if the 'pros' insist on being paid.

Well, if we want people representing us then we want to put out the best posible team, and if we want professional players then we need to pay them for it. If we can't afford it or we wnt to use our money elsewhere then that's a different matter (or it would be if the ECF were a democratic organisation) but as it stands, at least in principle I'd want to be paying people a reasonable rate for the job they're doing.

I suppose my point was that if teams (or individuals) fail to perform to expectation on a regular and consistent basis on the national stage in other sports there are very often adverse financial consequences for them in terms of reduced or withdrawn funding.

Russia beat France and should easily win gold now (three points ahead with two rounds left), though they are paired with Armenia in round 8. Silver and bronze could go anywhere.

Serbia and Croatia were closely matched, but the match finished 4-0!
Scotland and Kosovo both lost 4-0 and presumably play each other now.

England down to 17th place. Two big wins needed to get back into the top 10? Playing for pride now. Ukraine doing almost as badly as England, but England are doing really badly compared to their seeding. They are 12 placings away (17 vs 5). The next worse is Ukraine who are 8 places away (10 vs 2). The stand-out performers are Georgia in 5th vs their seeding of 17.
