From the looks of the live games, if Anna wins today it'll be something like this: Mammadzada 10/10, Hojjatova and Ivana 8/10, then Anna outright 4th with 7.5. Obviously it'll be a huge result if she can beat the top seed with black, but if she can manage that, a win in the last round would get her at least 3rd. Ivana has played Mammadzada, so Hojjatova would play Mammadzada whilst Anna would play Ivana. They were all black in this round, so I'm not sure whether Anna or her opponent would get white in the last.

Results are up now. Anna lost, sadly She's in a tie for ninth now, and no chance of a top 3 finish.

Felix Ynojosa has now caught Anna up for top individual result from the England juniors, with both on 6.5/10. Felix got a decent win against a 2242 opponent today, and has a 2180 FM as his opponent tommorow. 7.5/11 won't get him a medal, but may possibly get him a top- 10 finish, which given he started as 29th seed would be a very respectable result. Likewise for Anna, who's opponent tommorow is a 1682 rated WFM. A win would secure a top-10 finish, and a very respectable result.

She has still had a very good event, having played almost all the top players. For reasons previously given, a top ten finish was always much more realistic, and would also be an excellent achievement in itself. So let's she whether can recover from these last two days and secure that position by winning the last round. Then the serious work, hopefully a with a top coach, can start (or restart) when she returns home, if desired.

Because after all - to put a possible top ten finish into perspective - this would (I should think) still be the best performance from any British girl in a world junior event since the junior days of Jovanka Houska.

There is another British player now sharing Anna's score of 6.5/10, namely Felix Jose who beat a 2225 today. However there are so many players in the u-14 that it is not clear that even 7.5/11 (as he would have if he wins tomorrow) would suffice for a top ten placing. Still, he might at least be the only British player gaining rating points?

Simone Liao of the United States, the player mentioned above, was awarded the WFM title through winning the U10 girls gold medal at the Pan American junior championships in Mar Del Plata, Argentina, earlier this year. I think it is Fide policy to award such titles to all winners of continental junior championships.

Although her Fide rating is 1682, her current national USCF rating is 1915, which would be based on a larger number of games and is therefore probably more representative of her strength.

Hardly likely to be true, since she holds the GM title at men's/unisex level.


Besides, Kosteniuk herself played in the World Blitz Championship, featuring 22 leading players. She was last by 2.5 points.

When I was at ECC it was debated why is there only Judit etc. Many of the table suggested that Men become mentally obsessed much more easily. By this they meant that Women are much more diverse , hence the old do 2 things at once stereotype. But seriously the Female titles are good incentive to many girls around the 1800-2100 level.

I think this sort of idea to be more accurate, but thats subjective

Decided to try it as an attachment - fingers crossed that it works It didn't work!! Below is the content but not in correct columns. It looks OK in 'preview' but not on the forum
