Due to a last-minute cancellation of one of the participants, with Ju Wenjun and Hou Yifan having earlier declined the invitation—FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich assigned an additional wildcard spots to GM Divya Deshmukh.

Divya, the reigning Women’s World Cup champion, enters the tournament with strong momentum. While her rating and experience place her as an underdog, her recent successes—including the Women’s World Cup victory and a solid showing at the Grand Swiss—make her a formidable opponent. Her challengers should be prepared for a tough and competitive match.

This wildcard was granted as a special exception, partly motivated by the goal of ensuring female representation in the event’s highly competitive field, as this decision makes Divya the only woman in the open section of the 2025 FIDE World Cup.

Does anyone know who the last-minute cancellation was?

It does seem that FIDE are struggling with the concept of an OPEN competition. But are women choosing to focus on the women-only events and turning away from the Open events? Did any women attempt to qualify by right for the (open) World Cup? Is the prize fund better for the open than the Women's World Cup?

The Euriopean Individual Championship is a qualifier for the World Cup and there were a number of female entrants. All were far enough down the ranking to be extreme outsiders for qualification places.

Eleven consecutive games against strong GMs, lowest opponent's rating 2624. Seeded 115 out of 116, she was due to be wiped out but scored 5/11.

Since Vera Menchik and apart from Judith Polgar, how many female players have done so well in a top level open event? Hou Yifan in Gibraltar and ( I think I remember ) one other event. Any others?

Her games were on my screen every day I was able to watch and I was disappointed that more was not made of this amazing performance.
