"Can you appeal to arbiters for toilet relief when playing on the increment, and in what circumstances?"
I think you have to use the method mentioned in one of David Niven's books. You were not allowed to leave the table during Army Officers' Mess dinners, so you asked the waiter for an empty champagne bottle.

I don't think that applied in this game. The lichess clock times indicate that neither player used up all their initial allocation of time, so they still hadn't received the extra 30 minutes when the game ended.Richard Bates wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 5:20 pmCan you appeal to arbiters for toilet relief when playing on the increment, and in what circumstances?

Nearly spat my beer out haha. Which makes me think is Keith (Arkell) his real father? Makes a lot more sense.LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 11:17 amI shall reserve judgement until after rounds 3 and 5 (when my two teams face his). One thing is for sure, the liking for long games isn't inherited from his father.Thomas Rendle wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 9:47 amWhat he's doing isn't against the rules, but it's against the spirit of the game.
My view is: don't accept his entry to tournaments with increment (basically all of them these days) - it will mess up the round times etc.
Don't pick him for your teams. Obviously if he gives an assurance he's done with this nonsense then he's welcome to play again. I think the current situation is pretty unsatisfactory.

I can see Keith salivating at that game as an ultra proud father

I think he was saying an arbitor should be able to intervene or opponent can make claim of no progress being made. Let houdini play it out to prove the draw hahaPeter Shaw wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 10:43 am"His view is its the rules fault not him"
So what rule change does he want? There must be a reason for wasting everyone's time (including his own) but I don't understand what point he is trying to make.

Re: 4NCL 2024-25 Division One
That may apply to this game but it doesn’t apply to the game at Kingston which was really just a case of exploiting a blocked position to add hundreds of unnecessary moves before delivering the decisive breakthrough. And then a load more afterwards (although I suppose at some point that became “exploiting an opponent’s reluctance to resign”.Lee Bullock wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 7:08 pmI think he was saying an arbitor should be able to intervene or opponent can make claim of no progress being made. The question is still valid. It applies to all games, and while some, um, toilet management by the players themselves is needed, there are plenty of circumstances where some form of relief from playing on increment would be needed. You should always be able to stop the clocks and explain to your opponent and the arbiter, and hopefully common sense would prevail.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 6:33 pmI don't think that applied in this game. This point was made at an Olympiad some thirty years ago by GM Larry Christiansen, when thirty second increments were novel. I suggested the use of absorbent underwear, but the idea did not find favout with him.

He probably had that game on his mind and thought he was unstoppable haha. Maybe hoping for a medical emergency from his opponent. I will have serious words with Petey as he is not 10 years old anymore. Good we agree on something Richard. I guess it could be worse, just seen a game on YouTube that went on for 550 moves in the titled Tuesday event....

I wonder if this statement I've just received from chess.com is a reaction to that game - "We are considering removing the option for pre-moves in our prize event, making the playing field more even and fair for the players."Joey Stewart wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2024 5:11 pmI guess it could be worse, just seen a game on YouTube that went on for 550 moves in the titled Tuesday event....

Yesterday’s victory by Sharks over Wood Green means that the title is decided in favour of Manx Liberty, so today’s showdown between Wood Green and Manx is for pride only, plus, presumably, prize money.

What is the recent history of the 4NCL title?
https://4ncl.co.uk/data/history/winners-div1.htm
I see from that link that this is a resumption of Manx Liberty dominance, now 3 of the past 4 titles.

Never presume, there is no prize money.Graham Borrowdale wrote: ↑Mon May 05, 2025 9:25 amYesterday’s victory by Sharks over Wood Green means that the title is decided in favour of Manx Liberty, so today’s showdown between Wood Green and Manx is for pride only, plus, presumably, prize money.

I slightly regret that. It used to be a consoling thought upon relegation.
