Chessbase obituary for this Bulgarian grandmaster (GM) who died a few days ago on 31st July (this is not the Bulgarian GM Kiril Georgiev, who is the Georgiev who may be more familiar to Western chess players):

Krum Ivanov Georgiev (1958-2024) was born in Greece. The game given in the obituary is his victory against Kasparov in the 1980 Olympiad.

ISTR that Gazza showed an early example of his occasional gamesmanship in that encounter (contemporary chess magazines will have accounts)

I don't think Kasparov was showing gamesmanship in his dispute against Georgiev at the 1980 Malta Olympiad. Although I didn't see the actual incident, I was watching as the dispute blew up - they were making a lot of noise and Australia was playing nearby. It was clear that Kasparov genuinely believed that Georgiev had touched the d6 pawn. Whether this happened on the way through to capturing on e6, or whether Georgiev accidentally picked up the wrong pawn, or whether Kasparov was wrong, I think we'll never know. In case the arbiters' decision was correct as there seemed to be no witnesses, not even teammates.

Thank you for your contemporary recollections. I always enjoy your revisitings of former days in the Informants.
