Final IM norm for Shreyas Royal

Post by LawrenceCooper » Sun Oct 16, 2022 7:19 pm

Shreyas made his final IM norm at the Hull 4NCL GM Norm Tournament winning his last two games against IM Matthew Wadsworth & GM Gabor Nagy. He is over 2400 and so the ECF will hopefully be able to submit a title application in the near future.

Did he need 2/2 from those last two games? If so, that is very impressive. That really turned his tournament around!

(17...Qe8 a bit of an embarrassing blunder for Nagy!)

Yes, he needed to score 5/9 so no room for error on the final day.

That's great; he appears to have been playing at IM standard for a while. so good to see him get it over the line

474 players in total, all in one section. German "tourist" chess is alive and well.

Goodness, it will be hard to keep the records up-to-date at this rate! :D

I did notice in the latest CHESS (some excellent articles there, btw) that Harry Grieve won the Mindsports GM norm tournament (but not by enough to get a GM norm) and that Matthew Wadsworth won the IM norm event.

I recall some being sceptical of him and his family being allowed to stay in the UK.

Hopefully not so much now.

I think some posters didn't see why Shreyas being reasonably proficient at chess should be a significant factor in the decision making. That didn't mean the family shouldn't be allowed to stay. That Shreyas has fulfilled some of his potential is good news for him and for British chess but doesn't change the original view. I'm far from opposed to a more liberal immigration policy, simply unsure whether and how chess should be included in the evaluation process. Chess only comes into play because we are operating a 'points system', there might be a better more humane policy where chess is less relevant.

One couId argue this untiI the cows come home. Suppose, instead of being a chess prodigy, Shreyas had been a footbaII prodigy who was seen as IikeIy to feature in EngIand's next attempt to Iand the WorId Cup - few, if any, poIiticians wouId have risked the considerabIe wrath incurred by kicking him out of the country. (Is chess, then, Iess meritorious than footbaII?) That's not to argue the moraIity of the matter - just the reaIIty.
