Re: FIDE Grand Swiss 2021
Howell has so far used over an hour on his last four moves - thinking on move 21
With all the pieces still on the board against the number 3 blitz player in the world he is down to 20 mins!

Among the players on 6/9 Oparin seems to be doing the best, currently close to a winning position against Vitiugov.
Meanwhile David seems to be finding Firouzja a bridge too far.

Lie draws with Muzychuk (M) and claims the tournament and Candidates spot.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss 2021
Conquest tells us that Esipenko v Sasikiran had to be moved mid-game due to the overhead light failing.
Meanwhile fans of your study-like draw are referred to what Shirov missed (or conceivably, did not have time to check) on move 40 against Yu.
David is going down.

Are we now calling this the curse of Holowczak?JustinHorton wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 4:13 pmConquest tells us that Esipenko v Sasikiran had to be moved mid-game due to the overhead light failing.
If anyone sees the Buchholz-1 for the final round parings I would be very interested

Stroke of genius by David to find ....Qc6, when all seemed lost; think he came quite close to saving that.

Yeah, jaw dropping move.Nick Ivell wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 5:51 pmStroke of genius by David to find ....Qc6, when all seemed lost; think he came quite close to saving that.
..Bb8 was one of the few moves he played instantly, but unfortunately miscalculated something.
Very close.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss 2021
The studio wanted him to play ...Be5, which if I recall led to a strange line when White had queen for rook bishop and knight: Muzychuk (A) thought White was fighting for a draw but the computers like it. Btter than what David played though.
The draw is up: I assume David has no option but to win and then see if he's in the Grand Prix. Which is OK, when you're 34th seed.
Yu has a better tiebreak than Caruana so might sneak into the Candidates if he wins (although he's playing MVL) and Caruana doesn't.

A win for Oparin (who I know very little about) would guarantee him a place and require Caruana to win to deny Firouja.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 8:06 pmThe studio wanted him to play ...Be5, which if I recall led to a strange line when White had queen for rook bishop and knight: Muzychuk (A) thought White was fighting for a draw but the computers like it. David's definitely in the Grand Prix if he wins, yesno? There can't be more than 8 people finishing on 7½ or more.

We could yet have the traditional Buchholz excitement of watching some ending in the lower half of the draw deciding who makes it to the Candidates.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 8:06 pmYu has a better tiebreak than Caruana so might sneak into the Candidates if he wins (although he's playing MVL) and Caruana doesn't.

It will be interesting to see if he turns down a draw offer if one is made.LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 8:44 pmA win for Oparin (who I know very little about) would guarantee him a place and require Caruana to win to deny Firouja.
