New West of England Chess Union Website
The WECU has a new website, created a few days ago - http://www.cornwallchess.org.uk/wecu/.
I've been in touch with the Webmaster. It's in its early days at the moment, but if anyone can help fill in the question marks in the WECU Championship records that would be appreciated.

Re: New West of England Chess Union Website
Did you mean Thomas Hardy?
On the far right is Archibald Leach, then William Golding, Malcolm Marshall, then a Somerset trio of cricketers, then WG Grace, Hardy, Drake and a rugby footballer who is apparently Richard Adrian William Sharp from Cornwall. The rest were fairly obvious.

Thanks - I recognized Botham, Richards and Garner and the others (except the rugby player), but had never had occasion to see an image of Thomas Hardy.

The ECF Grading record for the event confirms this, assuming neither of Stephen Berry and Andrew Smith were eligible.

I'm not sure about that. The ECF Grading record for the event suggests MV Abbott or R Thompson won it, although it's not helpful that all sections have been graded as one. I'm assuming both players who scored 6 points, and the other two 5.5 point scorers, weren't playing in the Championship section. I'm also assuming D Cutmore either wasn't eligible or didn't win the game of his that's missing from the grading records. GP Taylor only scored 5 points, assuming his missing game in the grading records was a full point bye.

Both were regular competitors in Exmouth, but never eligible for the title.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 9:57 pmECF Grading record for the event confirms this, assuming neither of Steven Berry and Andrew Smith were eligible.
The crosstable derived from the grading records is unreliable because it doesn't record what are now known as pairing awarded byes. It doesn't look as if there were any material full point byes awarded.

The old chess Devon site usually had the WECU games available for download and I have built a probably incomplete collection of games from this and other British events. My download doesn't have either Thompson or Abbott in it suggesting they were in the second section. It does however have a full point bye for Taylor. Cutmore had a default win in round 1, but is SCCU based, so not eligible.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 10:07 pmThe ECF Grading record for the event suggests MV Abbott or R Thompson won it, although it's not helpful that all sections have been graded as one. (edit) Both the Cutmore brothers were playing, David Cutmore took a bye in round 4 (/edit)
It could be plausible that Taylor won the title on tie break. He was playing in the British of 2009 for which Exmouth was a likely qualification route.

You're probably right. They must have been in the same section because they played each other. Neither of them played anyone graded over 160. That would be unlikely if they were in the same section as all those players.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 10:34 pmThe old chess Devon site usually had the WECU games available for download and I have built a probably incomplete collection of games from this and other British events. Traditionally the Torbay area has been regarded as part of the West Country, but more guidance on West Country zoning disputes can be obtained here
