Remembering Joseph Blake (03-ii-1859 11-xii-1951)

Post by John Upham » Fri Dec 11, 2020 9:55 am

Joseph Blake was one of England's strongest players and a leading official.

He was active until at least his 90th birthday.

Thanks Neil.

I'm about to add his obituary from the 1952 BCM. I cannot OCR myself as I need to obtain 1952 (and 1951) to plug holes in my BCM library.

Its a three page obit !

He certainly moved around the country as a Railway Clerk and it was nice that most of his family also worked for the Railway.

Interesting chap.

I've just leafed through the bound issues of Chess from December 1951 to September 1952, to see what they said. Not a dicky-bird!
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

His name is one that crops up a lot over a long period of time, along with various of his games. Nice to see someone looking into himπŸ‘

Neil,

Requests for coverage of British persons hitherto ignored will be most welcome!

Frank Parr, Peter Morrish, Gerry Walsh and Paul Buswell are a few names that spring to mind.

Will people who have been covered again in 2020 be covered again in 2021?

We have updated this article to include obituaries of JHB from EG Sergeant and "MDB"

Careful investigation by Richard James suggests that MDB is Mabel Dorothy Barker, JHB’s niece in 6th Cross Road. :D

You heard it here first !

Hmm!. Leave it with me!!. Up to my eyeballs on a project at the moment. Ritson Morry - who I knew quite well - is one who comes to mind.

Francis Lee is someone I may eventually get round to writing about myself one day. I know nothing about him outside of his games.

For Ritson Morry see https://britishchessnews.com/2020/01/08 ... 08-i-1994/

I expect to be adding to this before January 8th.

Thanks John!!. I haven't dug through your material - just look at them when I hear about them. If you update the Ritson material, feel free to use my picture of him with Malcolm Barker and George Thomas. One of my very favourite chess pictures. Take care mate.πŸ‘

Some are appropriate to Birthdays and Anniversaries - not yet history.
