In what way is this a British knockout?

All the players were British.
I assume the point is they were also all English. I suppose the sponsor could make it an English only event without reducing the strength. But seems good to me that open to all home nations.

It clearly was an English event seeing as only English players were invited. The name needs to be changed.

It's not an ECF official event, Alan. It's a private event so they can call it whatever they like. Were it an official Championship then the ECF presumably would question players over 2500 being ignored while those hundreds of points lower rated were invited. It's more of a show event, pitting top players v youngsters. Furthermore, I believe that not only the playoffs but one of the rounds consisted entirely of rapid chess and blitz, so I wouldn't take it too seriously.

That isn't the view FIDE takes when someone calls an event a World Championship.Keith Arkell wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 10:33 pmIt's not an ECF official event, Alan. It's a private event so they can call it whatever they like.

That is true, but it was not the intention. It was forced on the organisers (and the arbiters) by circumstances beyond their control.Keith Arkell wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 10:33 pmFurthermore, I believe that not only the playoffs but one of the rounds consisted entirely of rapid chess and blitz, ...

Re: British Knock out 2019
That reminds me of an occasion when, in 2008, I played in a USCF rated tournament in Saratoga Springs. My opponent and myself were leading the event on 3/3 but, while we had a board and pieces, neither of us had a clock, so we had to play without one. Of course similarly, were, eg, a national title at stake, then such silliness could never have been allowed to happen!David Sedgwick wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2020 12:08 amThat is true, but it was not the intention. So complain to the sponsors?
In places it wasn't a knockout, which offends my nomenclatorial sensibilities.
Assuming it's a grumble that all the players were ENG, the event took place in Britain, so it was a British event. The British Grand Prix takes place in England and allows non-English cars and drivers...

If an invitational event takes place in Ipswich and all the invited players are members of Ipswich Chess Club, is it reasonable to call it the British something or other?

Not in my view, but it does happen. I believe there is a baseball competition in USA (Including only North American teams) called the "World Series". I played in a National Bank of Dubai event once, it wasn't held in a bank or in Dubai. Some winners in Mike Basman's competitions claimed they were British Champions.

At the risk of undermining the seriousness of all this, it brings to mind the "best dad in the world" episode from Seinfeld:

Depends if all the best players/players meeting the tournament objectives are from Ipswich.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2020 6:37 pmIf an invitational event takes place in Ipswich and all the invited players are members of Ipswich Chess Club, is it reasonable to call it the British something or other?

I'm puzzled as to what those objectives might possibly be.Richard Bates wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2020 9:54 pmDepends if all the best players/players meeting the tournament objectives are from Ipswich.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2020 6:37 pmIf an invitational event takes place in Ipswich and all the invited players are members of Ipswich Chess Club, is it reasonable to call it the British something or other?
