County Championships: ECF stages
We are shortly going to be doing the draw for the national stages of the county championships. This will, naturally, involve getting in touch with the relevant people at the five regional unions to tell them who their union's sides are paired against - and to find out which sides they are nominating.
Does anyone know who the relevant contacts are?

From here,
So to answer your question, for the MCCU, Cyril Johnson seems to be the person you need to contact. cyriljohnson(at)yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk is shown on the County captains page of the MCCU website.MCCU wrote:The draw for the national stages will be made in January when the National Controller knows how many teams in each section can be nominated by each union. When the union stages are complete teams' names are put into this draw according to unions' team nominations In the case of the MCCU, the union stage should be complete by the end of March 2010. After consultations with counties, the MCCU Events Director, Cyril, will nominate up to two MCCU teams for each of the sections.

Re: County Championships: ECF stages
I guess it`ll be mid to late March before the qualifier competitions are completed, so a while yet before details will be available...
I know the MCCU events are keenly competed, and pretty well run, generally speaking...and the MCCU website gives good coverage of the competitions.... http://www.mccu.org.uk/CountyMatches/20 ... e_news.htm
The initial question about who the Union chiefs/organisors are I think throws up an interesting question...that of communications within the UK chess hierarchy.
Maybe we need a central contacts database, with senior members of all our leading National, Union, County, Major Leagues, and Congress Organisors, junior chess, etc....along with a list of the major chess websites across the regions. I know there are many websites, but maybe keeping a note of the top 12 active websites in each Union/county area might be useful.
I browse a number of chess websites at various times for information, and many of these contain some very good content.
Communications and good publicity are key to the drive to improve awareness/support regarding the UK chess scene, and the many events it organises....I`d particularly like to see local/regional Press giving more publicity to League, Congresses, and other events....
And of course, the need for a good level of volunteers to keep the wheels turning throughout the British chess scene cannot be over stated.

Maybe I'm missing something blindingly obvious, but isn't this - the Union and County contacts at least - exactly what the ECF Year Book is for? In which case shouldn't Mr Rudd use one as a matter of course?

Thanks to RJH for pointing out that our own website should have this information
EACU Patrick Ribbands [email protected]
MCCU Cyril Johnson [email protected]
NCCU Jim Moran [email protected]
SCCU David Smith [email protected]
WECU Frank Kingdon (I think) [email protected]
They're all in the Yearbook and/or on Union websites. The rules are not on the current website. But they are still on the old website, at http://www.englishchess.org.uk/archive1 ... /rules.htm . That version is still current.

Re: County Championships: ECF stages
Perhaps whoever does the draw might read this first
http://www.sccu.ndo.co.uk/0708/matchbcf.htm#origdraw
Particularly the notes
Would be nice to see a first draw being correct, and each Union producing the right number of counties to actually play matches!

Re: County Championships: ECF stages
Thankfully I have faith in Adam. But it is true that there have been a number of indefensible decisions at the QF stage in recent years, with (more than once) a default being given a an early stage (i.e, it was actually planned) in the Open section when there were actual counties who could have been given the slot without breaking any rules.

How are the number of qualifiers for each section determined? Some zones seem to get 3 qualifiers, while others have 2.
