Certificate Expired
Somehow I missed the fact that the certificate was due to expire so apologies that has now been corrected.

Can I be the first to admit that I have no idea what this means

The SSL certificate "padlock" on the site is from LetsEncrypt and needs renewing every three months or so - somehow I forgot.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:43 amCan I be the first to admit that I have no idea what this means

Re: Certificate Expired
An SSL certificate (granted by a certificate authority) enables the server (in this case an http server) to respond successfully to inbound https requests and deliver the content encrypted in a fashion determined by the "cert". http returns the content "en clair" with less overhead on the server especially for images.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:43 amCan I be the first to admit that I have no idea what this means
The server is configured to listen on various ports such as 80 for http and 443 for https.
SSL = Secure Sockets Layer

Have you looked into automating renewing the certificate?Carl Hibbard wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:29 am

Separately, I wonder if there is a word for the linguistic phenomenon of which an example is still calling it an SSL certificate despite the protocol now being TLS. Maybe more learned forumites can advise?

You probably need to distinguish between people using the wrong teminology incorrectly, and an outdated term persisting because it is so well-known. I did find quite a lot of this in medical journals, as that seems to be a particular problem:

It seems from that, that sometimes failure to update terminology is simply people being lazy (and biased).

Re: Certificate Expired
It's probably a bit loose referring to them as SSL certificates or TLS certificates, because the certificate does not determine the cryptographic method that is used.
I wonder when we'll stop talking about "dialling" phone numbers?

Re: Certificate Expired
For some strange reason my 55 inch LG so-called "Smart" Televisual receiver running webOS is complaining that the server certificate from this place is not valid.
webOS appears to be aware of the correct date and time and has not time travelled and is therefore supplying the https client with the correct date and time.
Most peculiar.

Despite a televisual reboot the https client still complains.Carl Hibbard wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 5:32 pm

Hopefully it will fix it itself so that, once more, I can enjoy this place on a 55" 4K screen and full Dolby / DTS audio formats: what a treat!
Oh, and there is Sensurround to top it all off.
