English Chess Forum

I may be treading on hallowed ground but is it appropriate for any or all known deaths of chess players to be notified here?

Usually the convention on this forum is that posts should have some connection, no matter how tenuous, to "English" chess.

During the pandemic it may be appropriate to relax that unwritten rule and include obits of all titled players no matter what their connection to "English" chess may, or may not, be.

However, it might be better in abstruse cases to try to find and include some such connection(s) in order to avoid the notification merely passing by unremarked on.

An example of what I mean -

A GM who seems to have little or no connection to English chess.

A quick scan of 1,000+ games does not seem to include a single game played in the British Isles, nor even one played against a British player.

You've not done your research properly on Miroslav Tosic.
There was a lengthy article in The Telegraph in the UK on 18th March 2007 about Miroslav Tosic and how he met his wife over a chessboard in a simul.
It's titled " I looked into his eyes and he made his move."

Some much stronger players than Tosic never played in England, or indeed encountered few if any British players.

That does not mean we can't appreciate their contribution to chess, which is after all a genuine worldwide game.

I would rather have a late notification than incorrect. National media make mistakes.

Fair point. Sorry Justin for losing my rag. People should be grateful that I report these. Miroslav is well known on the chess scene. For a start he played in the same section as Adams, Howell and Arkell at the European Championships back in 2013.
As I said before, I have problems with my links as I don't have a laptop and the public libraries are shut.

I don't care what anyone says. I was trying to start a debate not an argument.

I am neither grateful to the dead nor the undead in this here necropolis of chessplayers and will depart and say no more on the topic.

JMs point is (IMHO) directly relevant to death notices and obituaries posted in this place.

You might not like his point but that is a different matter entirely.

General Chat is a good place to bury things I agree.

Firstly I agree that this thread does not belong here. This section is for deaths and obituaries, not discussion around them

Regarding the substantive point; there are arguments for and against such a wide spread of obituaries. One solution may be a separate section for `international obituaries`.

Assuming the question is in the context of the `substantive point` I referred to, the original question was whether there is too wide a range of obituaries being shared on this forum.

epitaphs. At my age more are dying reports late may be errors. On facebook I have about 10 family and firends please confirm . I do not when they are dead.

This thread may not be a Deaths & Obituaries thread, but it is even less a General Chat thread - it's an administrative topic about the forum itself.
