Chess will be compulsory in Georgian schools
See

In particular:
It must be noted that the decision of the Georgian Government aligns with the Declaration of the European Parliament of March 15 2012, on the introduction of the programme 'Chess in School' in the educational systems of the European Union, which reads as follows:
No doubt Nigel Fiasco is pleased.

Presumably any teachers who play chess, and there must be plenty of them, will get drafted in.

Eh
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Could making chess compulsory in the UK schools work? Really unsure on this one. What age is first grade? Appreciated we start early in the UK (potentially too early), compared to others.

Is their a strong argument why we would choose chess ahead of say a foreign language?

I'd be interested in a debate between others subjects also.
I wish I had done Latin at school but I failed to realise its significance as a scientist and now quizzer.

At the risk of censure for completely taking this thread down a different track, I would be very interested to know the significance John.

I find it interesting to discover how chess is and isn't delivered in various scholastic regimes world-wide compared with the scene here in good ole' Blighty. I was hoping others might share this interest.
This time of the year is always with some pain since I see my keen year 6 students leaving their primary schools to find their new school cannot be bothered to help them to continue their interest.
This is of reflected in entry numbers for junior tournaments in which they peak at around U12 and then suddenly fall of a cliff.
Prep schools seem to do a better job since they often continue to 13 years old at that school before moving on.

A few years ago my club offered to coach for free at a primary school. We were told there was no interest. This was totally false as my son and a few others were playing on a lunch time. They were only doing it for one year group and it was soon folded up.

It is often the case that making something compulsory makes it less attractive to young people.
