West London Chess Academy

First coaching session took place Sunday afternoon, 13 March, from 12.45 to 5.30. Description and pictures - 35 attended - at https://www.watfordchessclub.org/ pending WLCA designing its own website. Next sessions, 8 and 15 May.

Again, around 35 juniors attended the second WLCA session on 8 May. We'll be missing star names, such as Tanmay, for the next session on 22 May but I'II be joined by two well-respected local coaches in Ray Sayers (Bucks Youth) and Matt Ball (St Albans). There are currently six participating organisations (Bucks Youth and the Harrow, Maidenhead, St Albans, Uxbridge and Watford clubs) and the coaching is geared to juniors whose ratings exceed 100 x age (minimum 1000). We're open to expanding this in the medium term but, as matters stand, space considerations mean that each organisation can nominate only 6 or 7 juniors on average to any given session.

Nick, not unIess you've discovered the subject of magic rejuvenation, in which case pIease message me privateIy with detaiIs. The reference to 30+ was intended to indicate the number of juniors present for the coaching.

Specialist coaching subjects to follow - David will again be focussing on rook endings. Session strictly limited to 36-40 juniors.

Still a few last-minute places available - contact [email protected]. Three hour-long sessions starting 12.45 Sunday 10 July in Uxbridge. David Okike on rook-and-pawn endings, Senthilnathan Yogit on a classical game featuring a particular middle-game theme, and Tanmay Chopra on evaluating middle-game positions. After the first two sessions there's a 45-minute break with students having the option on reflecting on what they've Iearnt so far or playing an ECF-rated rapidpIay game against someone of similar playing strength. Value for money at £10 per student.

After today's session, next will be on Sunday 18 September, subject to there being no J4NCL that weekend.

Coaches for Sunday 18 September (12.45 - 5.30) at Uxbridge: FM Tanmay Chopra (2415) on "Practical decision making through calculation", FM Robert Eames (2188) on "Highlights from the best games of the new generation at Chennai and Torquay" and Ray Sayers (2080) on "Defence". Admission £10 to eligible juniors as determined by the coaches at the various participating clubs.
