Free beginners chess booklets may be downloaded at the links below.

They may be useful to children, adults wishing to learn chess from scratch and coaches who need ready- made material.

This was a project supported by the ECF and sponsored by St Catherine's School in Bramley.

This is a good moment to remind all newcomers to chess, parents, teachers and coaches who would like help, that the booklets above are still available as a free download. Useful in schools.

I would highly commend these publications. Some of the photographs included are most excellent.

I take a copy of these along to the popup chess sessions I do - together with a note of the download URL (and a QR code). They are a handy way to help discussion about quite how much a beginner is along the chess path.

The photos are a bit outdated I think - too many of the past times players who will be known only to older adults and not enough celebration of the inspiration provided by TicToc, YouTube etc.

Could you provide details of chess celebration provided by TikTok please?

Er no, I said '...celebration of the inspiration provided by TikTok, YouTube etc.' so let's look at what young chess enthusiasts are able to see on these platforms (compared to photos of past world champions). That is where they are getting their inspiration, not the collected games of Vasily Smyslov (https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessc ... id=1012435)

Top names include Hikaru, Levy (Gotham Chess), Agadmator, Rosen, Botez, Cramling ...
Have a look at these if you are in need of an update (says a 71 year old):
