Glorney 2021 online

Post by Wadih Khoury » Wed Jul 21, 2021 8:08 am

The Glorney Cup (as well as Gilbert, Robinson and Stokes Cups) are currently underway online.
There are only 4 teams in this edition: England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Games can be watched on chessbomb, and results are here: http://chess-results.com/tnr569577.aspx ... 46&flag=30

After 3 games (and 3 to go):

* U18 ENG tied with IRL
* U18G ENG second behind IRL
* U14: ENG clear on top
* U12: ENG clear on top

If a player was defaulted last year, are they eligible to play this year?

I have no idea. There is the full anti-cheating procedure: juniors on audio and video + screen share and verification of the task manager.

By the way, you will see players dropping in and out of the team, this is normal as there are more players than boards and there is a pre-agreed rotation.

It would appear so

I can't remember the row about this from last year (did the Dutch play as well?), but wasn't it established that Scotland had a no tolerance policy but not the other countries?

"I can't remember the row about this from last year (did the Dutch play as well?), but wasn't it established that Scotland had a no tolerance policy but not the other countries?"

I believe the Dutch did play, and "Yes". It's ironic that we are not allowed to see the results from last year, but the 1953 results are still available elsewhere on the forum.

Also, ECF Yearbook was published and talked about online cheating, but only to say it existed. From memory, only Danny Gormally commented it was a bad thing.

"If a player was defaulted last year, are they eligible to play this year?"

Almost immediately afterwards in one case. I queried this and was told that the individual didn't cheat in the subsequent event so that was good. Well, in a way...

The individual rounds do work though.

Yes, you had a mid-teen player who was banned before the final round of a Glorney event 12 months ago, was defaulted in all their games, caused the England team to lose the Cup overall, (without a single word of explanation or apology from either the player or team management), suffered ZERO punishment, was selected less than 2 months later to play for England in the Hybrid European Youth Championship, and has been selected to play again for England in this year's Glorney Cup. Boggles the Mind!

Not quite. Scotland were the only country not to have the results of any of their players changed. It was suggested that this demonstrated the effectiveness of their policies.

Andy Howie alluded to the subject in an interview with Mark Rivlin in January 2021. I attach this for convenience.

If I counted correctly, after round 5:

- U12 is won by ENG
- U14 is won by ENG
- U18G: ENG girls need to win 3-0 against Ireland in the last round
- U18: ENG players need to win 4-1 against Ireland to win it (3.5-1.5 may still win it, not sure of tie breaks)

Thanks, Wadih. I was hoping that at some point there would be a post relating to this year's chess, rather than previous cheating allegations.

I made a mistake, U18 only need to win against IRL.

I'm sure we want to support all the England players, but that was the case last year and we were let down; I'd like to think that we have learned from what happened, maybe specifically the different approach that Scotland took

Yes. The traditional silence on these matters suggests that the other tradition of giving some juniors favourable treatment continues.

ECF's attitude to cheating accusations is to keep quiet, and have even specifically said that they will not comment that people have been cleared of cheating as it invades the privacy of the people accused. Yes, really. Then ECF is surprised that they get accused of covering things up!
