U11 Junior Tournament in Oxfordshire

Post by Joseph Conlon » Fri Oct 09, 2020 10:23 am

I am organising an OTB U11 tournament in Oxfordshire on the 24th October - obviously subject to potential changes in the rules on what is allowed and what is isn't.

Capacity 30.

Details on the ECF calendar or directly via https://forms.gle/QdA76Z5S64KntGrv7

Fantastic, all the best of luck!

It is rapid I suppose?
Will there be a list of entrants?

Fantastic. Best of luck Joseph.
Is it open to Juniors outside Oxfordshire?

Simon: yes. As, indeed, it says on the entry form.

Wadih: Yes, rapid 15+8 time control. +8 is intended as 5 seconds +an extra 3 seconds to wait for your opponent to sit back and increase distance before replying...but if this also restrains the instinctive bang-bang-bang of juniors blitzing at the start of a game, it is also a good thing!

Thanks Joseph.

Wadih: no, not beforehand. Not really sure what the purpose of such a list is?

Good luck but... is this really an event that is allowed within "the rules"?

Don’t see why not - if you are thinking ‘rule of six’ and the like, ‘supervised activities for children’ is one of the specifically exempted areas.

Plus, covid-secure venues like schools, council buildings etc are a bit different in terms of what they can host - it wasn’t (as I understand it) the national restrictions that scuppered the Northumberland event but the specific restrictions in the north-east.

For Junior tournaments, it's always nice to see if friends and peers are playing too. For adult tournaments, helps deciding the right section.

The current restrictions in the NE of England would definitely prevent any chess tournament. I should, perhaps, warn potential organisers that an adult Rapidplay is unlikely to be sanctioned. The Council supported a full congress because the rule of 6 could be clearly demonstrated. Players would be in one group in the morning, there would be a clean up and then another group in the afternoon.

The fact that the group was for a reasonably lengthy time, the hall was then emptied and a proper clean were all important in gaining Council approval.

The only thing which surprises me about the proposed arrangements is that the pieces (and presumably clocks) will only be cleaned after 3 rounds.

Alex,

This is I think proportionate based on the following factors:

1. The event is for U11 only, who are less affected by the virus and also less likely to transmit it.
2. Given the ages and the time control, each game will typically be 15-30 mins and hands will be sanitised before and after each game - easy to enforce, 'White sanitise hands, Black sanitise hands, start the clocks' - different from a standard play game which may last for several hours and in which hand cleanliness would be harder to enforce or maintain.
3. The biggest touch points are actually likely to be e.g. entrances to the gents' lavatories where single-use cleaning would not be considered proportionate.

I am also influenced by observing the protocols at other activites my kids do / places they visit - e.g. at a local climbing wall, which has sessions involving ~15 people, the handholds are wiped down between each session, but not between each person - and similarly with soft play centres.

I think you will find there's an ECF website announcement scheduled for later today which Joseph will find comforting.
